Top Vidalia Democrat will join GOP today
Top Vidalia Democrat will join GOP today

By NANCY BADERTSCHER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 08/11/05
A seven-year legislative veteran is switching parties, giving Republicans a milestone 100 seats in the House of Representatives.

State Rep. Greg Morris, a Vidalia Democrat and entrenched party insider, is set to appear before friends and supporters in his hometown today to announce his defection to the GOP.

His decision bolsters the comfort level of the new Republican leadership in the 180-member House, which heads into the 2006 General Assembly session in control of 100 seats, nine more votes than they need to pass most legislation.

His defection is significant for Democrats since Morris, 41, was part of former Democratic House Speaker Terry Coleman's inner circle until Republicans took over the House and speaker's office last year

Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 11:36 AM by CottonBear
We are not all Republicans here. On the contrary, we are very purple rather than red.

edit: Have you ever been here in Georgia? You would find it quite nice and extremely senic from Brasstown Bald (mountains) to Tybee Light (coastal GA!

I have visited California and found it very beautiful and the people quite friendly (except for the snobby clerks in the Mexican Elvis/Howard Finster art gallery on Melrose Avenue.)

Georgia is a beautiful state and there are some wonderfully progressive people here and as soon as we get some hackers who can out-cheat the GOP (we're a Diebold state dontchaknow), it will be magnificant again!

29. We had a guy in our class, Gerbil - incredibly long story there-
who obviously hated women. He would always lunge for the breasts until the day I volunteered to fence him. I was just a hare faster than him and a better aim and I managed to get him right in the family jewels where there was a gap in the protective wear. Needless to say, after I mentioned that he might want to quit gouging us gals in the bazooms, he stopped doing it. One small victory for womankind!

My personal favorite PE was badminton. Ah, the glory days of college....

20. Yeah, you sit there safely in California,
way behind friendly lines, while we're out here having to fight against these creeps every day, all day! It's HARD WORK.

Did Martin Luther King work for civil rights in New Hampshire?
Did Ghandi work for peace in Norway?
Did Mandela work to end apartheid in... Ethiopia?

No. We are where the battle is, and we aren't surrendering and we aren't running away.

So if you don't have enough problems where you are, come help. Or at least try not to generalize in your insults so much.

We are on the same team.

48. Dems sure don't need to pander to Georgia
In fact, the more the Dems MOVE AWAY from what the majority of Goergians want and think like- the closer they'll be MOVING TOWARD relevance again.

The state's corrupt, it's elections are rigged and the fundies seem to hold sway everywhere outside Fulton County and Savannah. No sense in wasting time or money there on the national level.

8. Recall the asshole
Why if you were elected as a Democrat can you switch parties? If you were elected as a dem regardless of the voting record (nazi right) then you should be forced to runoff against a real democrat before they can let you switch. Maybe the voters have changed their mind and don't want you to represent them but they don't have a choice to switch to the opponent do they? NO

14. I spoke with the GA Lt. Gov., Mark Taylor (D), about this very issue.
I was very concerned and upset about the newly elected Democrats who switched parties prior to being sworn into office thus throwing the majority to the Republicans in the Georgia General Assembly.

Lt. Gov. Taylor told me that there was nothing that one could do to legally stop this. They had investigated the issue and it was determined (in other states where it had happened) to be a "freedom of speech" issue and thus allowable. The only recourse is to demand a refund of all campaign contributions.
:( :( :( :( :(
That said, good riddance.

18. Was this a conspiracy?
First I have heard of it, but I am not from Georgia.

Are you saying there were several to do this? I wonder if the Republicans ran shills as Democrats with this in mind.

I am from Missouri, and when I was growing up, you couldn't get elected unless you were a Democrat, so Republicans who wanted in ran as Democrats--talked the talk, etc.

I don't recall any of them switching parties though. However, the practice eventually and effectively let Republicans get a stronghold in the state.

22. They switched when it became apparent that the Republicans
had stolen the election by Diebold. They held secret talks with the newly elected Republican Governor and his minions. They switched and threw the majority to the Repubs.

Poor Max Cleland and Cynthia McKinney got voted/hounded out of office. (Max was replaced by the evil Saxby Chambliss.)

Our Democratic governor, Roy Barnes, lost to Sonny Perdue (a former Democrat.) While still in office, Roy Barnes appointed Zell Miller to replace desceased Republican, Paul COverdell and we all know what happened next.

We still have Democratic office holders but they are endangered or running for other offices): Cathy Cox who is running for Gv. (SOS - responsible for GA being 1st in the nation 100% Diebold :( ), Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor who is running for Gov., Atty. General Thurbert Baker (black man) and Secretary of Labor Michael Thurmond (black man).

9. If a white southern conservative lectures you about "southern heritage"
then your response should be, "Oh, you must be a Democrat. Remember that General Sherman and all of his scorched earth henchmen were Republicans. Republicans invaded the sovereign states of the south and shoved Reconstruction policy down their throats. No southerner who honors the heritage of Dixie could be a Republican. We'll expect your vote come November."

13. We are constantly told that we can't talk about "choice",
and we can't talk about gays, or immigration, or religion, or universal health care, or opposing the war, or anything else that might be even a tiny bit controversial, because it might SCARE PEOPLE AWAY FROM OUR PARTY. Well, all these defections in Georgia are happening while the party leadership here is NOT talking about these things!

If we believe in our principles, we should not be afraid to express them. If we have to explain them better, then so be it, let's get to it.

I believe our principles are good for everybody, not just me.
