FDNY Releasing Sept. 11 Papers, Recordings

Thursday, August 11, 2005 8:40 p.m. ET
By MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- After years of legal battle, the Fire Department of
New York is releasing thousands of documents offering a detailed and
intimate look at the heroism and missteps behind its response to the
Sept. 11 World Trade Center attack.

The department on Friday plans to make public hours of radio
transmissions and hundreds of oral histories telling the story of
firefighters' rush to the twin towers on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001,
to help evacuate thousands of people.

The Sept. 11 commission, which had access to the histories and
recordings, described major flaws in the city's response to the
attack. Emergency radios did not function properly. Police and
firefighters did not work together. Discipline broke down. Vital
messages went unheard.

But some of the families of the 343 firefighters killed say they
hope the information will cast additional light on the problems
that contributed to the death toll.

1. Problems that contributed to the 9/11 death toll
Hmm - biggest problem of all: BUSHCO LIHOP.

Who can ever forget commander AWOL sitting in a Florida classroom for half an hour after learning that the USA was under attack -- so he could finish reading My Pet Goat.

7. Families Brace for Release of 9/11 Papers
August 12, 2005, 3:47 AM EDT

NEW YORK -- Families and colleagues of firefighters lost on Sept. 11, 2001, were preparing to revisit the chaos and loss of the day with the release of hours of radio transmissions and thousands of pages of firefighters' oral histories.

Compelled by a New York Times lawsuit, the Fire Department of New York planned to make public Friday 15 hours of radio transmissions and more than 500 oral histories recounting the rush to the World Trade Center towers that saved an unknown number of civilians but cost 343 firefighters their lives.

The information may cast additional light on the problems that contributed to the death toll. It's also certain to bring back searing memories, and renew the nation's appreciation of the firefighters' sacrifices, said Peter Gorman, president of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association.

"I think unfortunately it's going to add to some pain, initially. For some people it might have a very healing effect," Gorman said. "When people actually go back to that raw, emotional, historical moment, I think they'll realize that a lot of our members, both living and deceased, did some extraordinary things that day."

9. BBC coverage

The city of New York is set to release fire department records from the attacks on the World Trade Center.

They include transmissions recorded on 11 September 2001 and testimonies from firefighters which were gathered later.

The city was forced to release the documents following a lawsuit filed by the New York Times, and supported by relatives of firefighters who died.

Records already published by the paper have raised questions whether some of the deaths may have been avoided.

10. Will we hear the explosions being detonated on the tapes?
I know that some firefighters definitely described detonations that day and maybe it will be apparent on the tapes. Once you can prove a controlled demolition the whole official story will be exposed as the fraud it is. Call me names if you will but I think I look good in tinfoil. ;-)
