Roadside bombings in Iraq are increasing

WASHINGTON (AP) — The commander of U.S. transportation and other logistics forces in Iraq said Friday that the number of roadside bomb strikes against his troops throughout Iraq has doubled in the past year.

Army Brig. Gen. Yves J. Fontaine, commander of the 1st Corps Support Command, said the number of insurgent attacks along supply routes has grown to about 30 per week, although the U.S. casualty rate has declined because extra protective armor has been installed on supply trucks and other vehicles in the transportation fleet.

Most of the attacks, he said, are in the so-called Sunni Triangle region that extends north and west of Baghdad.

"As a matter of fact, we have seen an increase in the use of IEDs on our convoys," he said, using the military's acronym for improvised explosive devices, or roadside bombs. "And our main threat is the IED for the logistics convoys coming from Kuwait, Jordan and Turkey, and then going to the Baghdad area."

5. Thats what i thought.
I thought the very same thing. I thought i remembered reading yesterday that these kinds of attacks had declined by half.

So much for truth and clarity.

6. Yep. Yesterday's news was that they had declined in the last
few months and gotten more lethal. Well, maybe not yesterday's--in the last week.

But check the details. They're looking at different samples.

One's a specific subset: this guy's logistics unit. The other's for US troops in Iraq. They could easily both be right.

8. You're right,that was yesterday...
It's kind of like them saying they intend to reduce troop levels, then a day or two later saying that the levels will be raised, then they can be reduced.

Just reading what this admistration puts out hurts my brain. All of their statements now sound like they were written by Rummy. For anybody out there who ever wondered what it would be like if first graders could run the world, they are seeing the results right now.

3. It just shows they are "desperate"
Ollie North said so.

Let's just hope that we don't start 'succeeding' in Iraq, because then that will show that we are 'desperate' too.

9. there ought to be a way to pin post together..
This post would look great if it was stuck yesterdays' report from the WH (or Pentagon) that said that attacks are declining. Allowing both titles to be seen simultaneously,

exposing the way they make competing statements, such as no troop withdrawal and troop reductions in six months.

10. What? Impossible! The U.S. just claimed that bombings had declined.
After all, our government wouldn't lie to us, would it?
