State: No more fenced hunting (Indiana "canned hunts")
August 12, 2005

State: No more fenced hunting
Ruling closes loopholes in the law that allowed hunters to kill captive animals.

By Leia Baez
leia.baez@indystar.com

The state moved Thursday to shut down a controversial business: the hunting of semi-tame deer or exotic animals on fenced preserves.

"In America, our hunting tradition is for fair chase and for animals to have an avenue for escape," Kyle Hupfer, director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, said in announcing the decision.

About 12 fenced preserves operate in Indiana, according to state officials. The facilities charge clients up to $20,000 to shoot trophy wildlife in a practice sometimes called canned hunting.

The DNR's move followed the high-profile trial of Russ Bellar, a Peru deer farmer who was convicted this year of charges he ran illegal hunts.

An investigation revealed that deer were drugged and selected from pens; sometimes bait was used.

1. That's great news!
What's so masculine about shooting fish in a barrel anyway?

3. Needs to be a federal law against this
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 02:29 PM by kwolf68
About 20-25 states (maybe more) already ban this...and there is legislation banning "canned hunts" that is on the table, but we haven't been able to get it through as of yet.

4. Barry Crimmins just said on AAR bush fundraising today at ranch
that provides canned hunts. Huge fences around so the deer can't get out.
So sporting. Such macho hunters, to be admired and envied.

6. If only this was nation wide
Here in TX, it's called Hi-fencing. I despise this practice, not only is it just plain unethical as far as hunting goes, it's also unfair to the state. It creates a risky environment as far as disease, due to unnatural populations. If drought hits they have no where to go. Theres a total of 10 miles of fence on my place, it keeps my cows in and lets the deer come and go at will.

As i said before, A Disgusting practice, 3 cheers for Indiana

8. As a hunter...
i have no idea what the interest is in hunting in such a manner. It would almost like going to a zoo and picking out the biggest animal to take. What's fun about that?

Most hunting shows are filmed on such ranches, and that is why i don't like watching them.

10. Good
Canned hunts are an abomination, an utter perversion of the hunt.

For the funniest canned hunt in literature see Carl Hiaasan's Sick Puppy. Karma with a capital K.

15. Yay, I'm not the only one!!! (re: earthworms)
My wife thinks I'm a bit wierd for that...but I hate to see the things frying in the sun, and they're good for the soil...

I am a gun owner, but I don't hunt. I'm not opposed to hunting per se, but I don't think I'd enjoy killing a deer.

27. It's vile beyond belief. They'll take hand raised panthers or wolves
animals that are accustomed to trusting human, then they'll terrorized them with hunting dogs, and wound them with dozens of arrows or bad shots before killing them (I've seen video). All in the name of "sport". I find killing for "sport" to be reprehensible to begin with, but there's a special place in Hell for people who pay for canned hunts.

30. it will be a screaming line drive in the boxscore tomorrow..
Thought someone would mention that after they have the
"trophy" on their wall, there will of course have to be some
big story about how I tracked it down, through rough brush for
hours and hours, and I was so patient and cunning....blah blah blah
