Admiral Giambastiani Sworn in as Vice Chairman of the JCS (Meyers retires?

Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Public Affairs)
News Release No. 833-05 IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 12, 2005

Today, Adm. Edmund P. Giambastiani Jr., has assumed the duties as vice chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Gen. Peter Pace will assume the duties as chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff on Sept. 30, 2005.

Gen. Richard B. Myers will retire from active duty on Oct. 1, 2005.

During the time between when he steps down as vice chairman and when he will be sworn in as chairman, Pace plans to meet with combatant commanders, Joint Staff leadership, and members of the interagency in preparation for assuming his new responsibilities.

... Myers will be a special consultant to Lockheed Martin or Boeing in a year.

And Pace should be the one to be watched, not Giambastiani. Pace has been one of the people who's been pushing the "few bad apples" routine with regard to torture claims, along with being the stand-behind foil in several of Rumsfeld's press conferences on the issue. My guess is he's going to be the guy who cracks the whip on staff who aren't gung-ho for more Bush wars of opportunity.

7. Looks like the usual replacement schedule.
Myers apparently did two stints as chief of staff, from 9/01 to 10/05, and 10/1 is the required time for a new term to start.

He was born in 1942, 40 years service in the Air Force. I can't fault him for bailing after 40 years.
