Chavez to Give Latin Countries Priority in Developing Heavy Oil
Aug. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said he will give priority in developing the country's heavy oil reserves in the Orinoco belt to companies in Latin America and the Caribbean and not the U.S.

Chavez, who offered blocks last week to Uruguay's state oil company and Rio de Janeiro-based Petroleo Brasileiro SA, has said the Orinoco Faja or oil belt may hold as much as 300 billion barrels of oil.

``The oil from the Faja won't be for Mr. Danger,'' Chavez said during a three-and-a-half hour televised address to a youth conference in Caracas, in a reference to U.S. President George W. Bush. ``In the first place oil will be for the Venezuelan people, and then the people of Latin America and the Caribbean.''

Venezuela, the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, is readying plans to offer as many as 27 blocks in the Orinoco belt to oil companies. U.S. companies, including Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp. and ConocoPhillips, are the main shareholders in three of the four joint ventures now operating in the area.

1. It must drive Bush absolutely batshit
that the U.S. can no longer stomp its feet and get its way, not even in Latin America. How he must long for the days when the U.S. was rich and the A.I.D. had deep pockets for all.

Now it's Chavez with the cookie jar full of foreign aid. How sweet is that?

2. Hugo Chavez doesn't seem to be in awe of a brush-clearin', axe-wieldin',
lumberjack/ace pilot/President with a mandate!

I'll bet it's hard for Republicans to know how to deal with people who can't be bought or threatened into submission.

Y'know, if he spent more time back there in his Oval office, sitting at his desk, acting Presidential, maybe he could get out of some of these back-breaking chores, and death-defying flying assignments!

5. Venezuela renews threat to cut oil exports to US, says US market not vital
CARACAS (AFX) - Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez renewed his threat yesterday to suspend oil exports to the US if the US administration steps up its 'attacks' against his government.

In March, Venezuelan officials, including Chavez, made similar threats.

'We do not want to sever links with the US government, but if the attacks keep increasing, as they recently did, this will put at risk the relations between Venezuela and the United States,' Chavez said in a speech yesterday.

Chavez added: 'The two oil tankers that ship oil everyday to the United States might go somewhere else.'

6. Chavez: US Not Essential To Venezuela Oil Sector -Report
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 09:38 AM by bemildred
CARACAS -(Dow Jones)- The U.S. market isn't essential for Venezuela's oil industry, but the the world's fifth largest oil exporter won't cut oil supplies to the U.S. unless the Bush administration provokes such a move, President Hugo Chavez said during a student forum Sunday, according to local media reports.

"The North American market is not important," said Chavez, according to local newspaper El Universal.

He said Venezuela could easily find other buyers for its oil.

---

"Those two daily tankers of Venezuelan oil, instead of going to the U.S., could go someplace else," Chavez said.

As I understand it, the stations themselves are generally franchises owned by people, but the CITGO brand is owned by Venezuela.

11. The reality is...
Venezuela has nothing else to sell in the open market other then oil and gas. They have debt obligations so they have to sell to someone in order to keep paying their national debt because if they default then no one will give them credit in the future when they need and eventually oil prices will fall and the countries output has been declining for years.

Chavez likes to play the anti-American anti-capitalist card to gain popularity at home but he isn't doing his people any favors by chasing off foreign investors. These problems will be hidden as long as oil prices are high but eventually they will catch up to him and the average Venezuelan will be worse off because of it.

12. You're overlooking the fact Bush funded opposition factions
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 02:30 PM by Judi Lynn
using U.S. taxpayers' money, to set strikes in motion, and the coup attempt, and finally the recall referendum. Since that time, Bush has been breathing down Hugo Chavez's neck daily.

Tell how it is Chavez can be described as anti-American and anti-caplitalist. Links would help, rather than your unfounded claims.

On edit: Resisting the overt agression by the right-wing nutso Bush administration is NOT anti-American, nor anti-capitalistic.

25. Chávez, not anti-capitalist?

Chávez's rhetoric has been attacking capitalism for years- just about every Venezuelan interested in the matters knows that, even when some of them don't know what capitalism means.

Here are some links that mention Chávez's stance towards capitalism.

http://www.greenleft.org.au/back/2004/597/597p17.htm - focus on the capitalism part.

http://www.greenleft.org.au/back/2005/635/635p15b.htm - "the perverse model of capitalism"

http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/news/050531a.asp- "In this typical diatribe, Chavez compared capitalism to Count Dracula, Frankenstein, Jack the Ripper and the Boston Strangler, but then added that Capitalists are much worse than those monsters."

http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/South_America/CapitalismSavagery_Chavez.html- excerpts from a Chávez speech translated into English.

-"Capitalism is savagery."
-"Every day I'm more convinced, less capitalism and more socialism."
-"I have been a Maoist since I entered military school, I read Che Guevara, I read Bolivar and his speeches and letters, becoming a Bolivarian Maoist, a mixture of all that.

Mao says that it is imperative, for every revolutionary, to determine very clearly who are your friends and who are your enemies."
-"We need to transcend capitalism, but capitalism cannot be transcended from within. Capitalism needs to be transcended via socialism, with equality and justice, that's the path to transcend the capitalist power."
-"Today, the situation does not involve guerrilla cells, that can be surrounded by the Rangers or the Marines in a mountain, as they did to Che Guevara, they were only maybe 50 men against 500, now we are millions, how are they going to surround us Careful, we might be the ones doing the surrounding...

not yet, little by little.

Empires sometimes do not get surrounded, they rot from inside, and then they tumble down and get destroyed as the Roman Empire and every Empire from Europe in the past centuries. Some day the rottenness that it carries inside will end up destroying the US Empire."

The Bushites Iraq war has has reduced supplies, hamstrung any military response, and made destabilization a pyrrhic option, a destabilized Venezuela is not going to be a reliable oil supplier, witness our good buddy Colombia. Meanwhile the whole Middle East is teetering on the edge of chaos, mostly held off by the fact all the bad guys are in Iraq teeing off on our troops. These guys (the Bushites) could give seminars on how to be stupid.

13. To DU readers interested in the new Telesur network....
Just ran across it, found this not at all surprising! Bush's puppet President Uribe is blocking Telesur in Colombia.
Claim: Colombia Jams Telesur Signal
By Al Giordano,
Posted on Thu Aug 4th, 2005 at 03:30:58 AM EST
This is predictable and also doomed to fail: A report in the Venezuelan daily El Universal says that the government of Colombia has censored Telesur, the new Latin American TV news network.
The Colombian National Television Commission (CNTV) blocked satellite access to Telecapital, a government channel that rebroadcasts Telesur signal.
The hemispheric news system boosted by Venezuela started operations last July 24th, with programming including documentary films, news coverage and a number of journalist works that highlight the Latin American people, as explained in the Monday edition of Semana magazine.

The decision may result in clashes between national authorities and Bogotá town council, led by socialist Luis Eduardo Garzón, the weekly added, quoting a CNTV source.

The Committee decided not to grant access to the satellite of the Bogotá channel. Therefore, Telesur programs could not be seen in most part of Colombia. However, signals were authorized from TRO, a small channel operating to the East, on the Colombian-Venezuelan border.

15. I like Chavez's political agenda but
I think he's dead meat. He's going to get infiltrated by the National Endowment for Democracy and the CIA. The State Department is hassling him, too. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/world/3308567

The U.S. has too much money and guns. He'll eventually get picked off.

17. Theyve been trying and failing for almost a decade.
While I certainly agree with the asymetricity of the power here, the fact remains that Chavez has survived America's attacks up until now and seems to actually be increasing his power in the face of American opposition.

18. Right-wing Repub. Presidents have stuck their snouts into Latin American
affairs with complete impugnity for so long, because they could always spot easily corrupted, bribeable, vicious people in government who couldn't care less about the welfare of the masses in each country.

This adventurism and sadistic bullying has gone on, uninterrupted so long that it almost seems a miracle now that the masses themselves are organizing and pushing into leadership positions strong characters they think can face off the tyrants from the U.S. 100% certified mentally defective Republican Party who've been looking at them as uppity servants who need to be put in their places.

I PRAY the 21st Century brings these countries the solidarity they need to get our Republican clowns off their backs, out of their pockets, and out of their own national governments FOREVER.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Photo shows Bush walking with the recent Panamanian President, Mireya Moscoso, who performed the courtesy of pardoning the 4 Cuban Miami "exile" would-be assassins of Cuban President Fidel Castro, who were in prison in Panama for organizing to commit his murder.
One of them, Luis Posada Carriles, an ex-CIA agent, Reagan/Bush Iran-Contra creep, Venezuelan secret police head, and Miami resident, is currently Bush's problem as he tries to figure out a slick way to pacify the Miami "exile" community by releasing him from prison where he's being held currently in Texas.
There's a familiar face in the crowd BEHIND the gruesome twosome you might recognize.
