Germany's conservatives attack Schroeder on Iran

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's conservative opposition said on Sunday Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's warnings against using military force to make Iran give up its nuclear program risked undermining international solidarity for electoral gain.

"The Chancellor is creating the fatal impression in Tehran that the world community is not united anymore," Wolfgang Schaeuble, senior foreign policy specialist of the opposition Christian Democrats told the daily Die Welt.

"In doing so, he is accepting the consequence that the danger of an Iranian atom bomb will grow," he said, according to an extract of an article from Monday's edition.

Iran angered the European Union and the United States by resuming work at a uranium conversion plant last Monday, rejecting an EU incentives package offered in return for giving up its nuclear program.

2. Militarism holds back democracy, and props up the economy
without raising the quality of living.

5. And this is why they love it?
I think it's because they're scared and greedy.

like it, although you could make a good argument that thier underlying motivations are greed and fear. Conservative footsoldiers identify with the ideology for thier own personal reasons, largely greed and fear as well.

12. Because a tiny 0.002% percent of the population makes a fucking killing in
profits. That .002% should make some 50,000 people extremely rich.

3. BS, the world is NOT united on this issue to begin with and evidence
is flowing in that backs Tehran's claims - it was Pakistan's (Kahn) uranium that was found.

Cons are not only for war, but seem to think it is their g_d given right to speak for the rest of the world when it comes to war-mongering.

4. This is worrying since the conservatives are currently leading

Are there that many Bush Kool-aid drinkers in Germany?

BTW, all the European lefties I know are no fans of Schroeder, they seem him basically as a deadweight, and would not miss him if he's voted out. If the conservatives are true neo-cons though than hopefully they'll vote for the lesser of two evils in this case.

10. not quite true
polls throughout the last two weeks show that the conservatives (CDU and FDP combined) cannot expect to easily win this. Percentages currently are:

29 SPD
42 CDU
10 Left party (new, headed by former SPD chairman Lafontaine)
9 Greens
6 FDP

Right wing coalition: CDU/FDP = 48
Left wing coalition: SPD/Greens/New Left: 48 (Schröder currently rules out such a coalition, but we'll see ...).

Since the majority of Germans will not support the "war option", Schröder will use any opportunity that Bush provides to garner the anti-war vote (again). The louder Bush babbles, the better for the SPD. Whether this will be enough to secure victory remains to be seen. IMO, the most likely outcome is a grand coalition between CDU and SPD.
