Bush Blasts XXX Domains

Bush administration cites protests of triple-X porn domains on the Internet.

The Bush administration has put up a stop sign in the Internet’s new red-light district, asking for a delay in Tuesday’s scheduled approval of XXX domains due to voter concerns about the growth of pornography on the Internet.

“The Department of Commerce has received nearly 6,000 letters and emails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children,” wrote Assistant Secretary Michael Gallagher in a letter to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The U.S. Commerce Department has reserved the right to block the XXX domain no matter what decision ICANN or the ICM Registry ultimately makes. The department issued a report during 2000 to the General Accounting Office stating that even after it transferred control over the authoritative root server to ICANN, it would still retain final policy control.

Conservative groups like the Family Research Council have been encouraging their members to write to the Commerce Department to protest the new triple-X domains.

3. Figures
Requiring all porn to use a .xxx domain would make blocking porn from workplaces and kids so much easier on admins and parents. The only thing is who is determing what is and what is not porn

8. I believe existing registrations would be grandfathered
so my example of whitehouse.com in my previous post is flawed. Still, what this boils down to is the usual prude-squad suspects shouting loudly "we don't like it, therefore nobody should have it." 6000 complaints is NOTHING. Hell, that's only one mega-church's worth of complaints. But the prude-squad is loud. And used to getting its way.

Once again, logic escapes them. Setting up an XXX domain will not cause more porn sites (if that's even possible). The sites will be easier to filter out if they have that domain.

7. Um... wouldn't that make it EASIER to block porn sites?
Technically( I know they wouldn't do this), but if all porn sites were made to use the .xxx suffix (I know, I know, DEFINE porn sites) then filering of porn sites would be less mysterious and easier. If you wetn to some computer and it said "this internet access blocks content from .xxx sites" it would much clearer than "this internet access blocks all content that is deemed inappropriate and "lude" You'd think porn-control advocacy groups would welcome a "redistricting" of the internet's red light district.

46. Yes, but the 6,000 are members of THE PARTY
Just like the old Soviet Union, which Imperial Amerika grows closer to every day, one million non-PARTY members' lives are not even close to being equal to the worth of the lives of PARTY MEMBERS.

End of story. It really is as simple as that. Why? Free nations are complex. Totalitarian Nations, such as Imperial Amerika, are simple as easily predictable.

The life of a single PARTY member of the Busheviks is worth more than a whole heap of burning corpses of the Enemies of the State (i.e., anyone who is not a PARTY Member).

This is not new, but has been going on since the Old United States of Aerica died in 2000. It is a natural progression for Slave Nations like ours.

22. Lusers reveal themselves again.
I assume the real objection is that the top-level domain lends legitimacy to the smut business, as this will have zero effect on net porn, and will keep smut filtering in the disorganized and ineffective state that it now is. The net is and always has been a fountain of pornography, a trasher of taboos and sensibilities. It's kind of stunning the sheer quantity of smut there is out there, being churned out every day. Most kids with access have seen everything there is to see in excruciating and unromantic detail by the the time they reach puberty, and there seems little probability of stuffing the genie back in the bottle short of bringing the net down for good. Even in the old dial-up bulletin-board days 80% of what was out there was smut.

But this is just political posturing (How's it going Cindy?) and not really intended to do much else but distract and suck up to certain constituencies.

How easy will it be to put a filter that blocks any sites that are

It's just a sop to the fundies. Porn is the Internet's biggest business, and if anything, Bush will use the smut campaign as a way to extort more money from his Pioneer porn contributors so they'll be upgrading their protection. Look at it as the Norton AntiVirus subscription approach to planned political giving.

Some wanted to make it mandatory for adult sites.
Some even attacked ICANN for initially refusing

Now the zealots are threating to derail it,
leaving the status quo.
