Tensions force anti-Bush peace camp to move

1 hour, 40 minutes ago

CRAWFORD, United States (AFP) - A high profile peace camp set up by anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan is to move from the roadside outside
President George W. Bush's Texas ranch to a private property nearby following mounting hostilities with local residents......

One man drove a sports utility truck over white crosses, planted by the activists and bearing the names of US soldiers killed in
Iraq on Monday night. Some residents have sought a court order to stop the activists parking near the ranch.

Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq, has also had a bad week with the news that her husband has filed for divorce.

But the 48-year-old said she would not leave. "What happened last night is very disturbing to all of us and to all Americans," she said of the vandalising of the crosses.

18. No, I hadn't...
...and I'm reacting primarily to what I've seen on the Web, and reports from folks like Guy James (who did his show from Crawford this past Saturday).

We need to STOP worshiping George W. Bush as the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

He is NOT God's Little Chosen Prince. HE'S A FUCKING AWOL ALCOHOLIC! He's a WORTHLESS FUCKING FRATBOY from CONNECTICUT! He wants to "re-connect with his Texas roots?"

HE HAS NO FUCKING TEXAS ROOTS!

Note to State of Texas: What the fuck is WRONG with you?

He's a "dry drunk" (as Bernie Ward said last night), and Oedipal AWOL Coward War-Mongering Substance-Abusing POS MOTHERF**KER, and as long as the town of Crawford Texas displays life-sized cardboard cutouts of this bastard, they can KISS-MY-ASS.

NOTE TO CRAWFORD: You stupid motherf**king redneck POS hole-in-the-wall dustbowl excuse for a "town"...you should not feel "civic pride" over your most "infamous" resident.

:grr:

33. The redneck is the good guy.
He's the one who offered Cindy and supporters the use of his land. The realtor, Larry Northern, is the one who ran over the crosses. He's an idiot, not a redneck. That's the irony in this case. It's the redneck riding to the rescue. His cousin, Larry Mattlage, though, is an @sshole redneck, no argument there! ;)

3. Thank you, cousin!
A REAL Texan, obviously, who won't stand for bullies and flunkies throwing their weight around. Never saw a real Texan who wasn't a fan of the underdog, and who wouldn't get involved in an unfair fight.

Thanks from West Texas!

7. WH spokesperson issue a statement today.

....The president's refusal was reaffirmed Tuesday by White House deputy spokeswoman Dana Perino.

"He has met with her," she said. "One of the most cherished rights in America is the right of free speech and she has a right to express her views. He doesn't agree with her views but he respects her right to peacefully protest."

30. Being forced to move was on the table is my understanding after last
night's little affair. Already though, the sheriff, I believe had asked her to stay in town for her own safety (I read it someplace else). A kindly rancher very close to the ranch stepped forward this am or maybe late last night and made this very kindly offer.

More to come, details being worked out.

Thanks DU for staying on top of this and being so wonderful!!

From my heart and unofficialy on behalf of everyone at the Peace House.

Once again, DU rocks the house!

Peace.

What she's been through is almost unimaginable, and it will get worse before it's over. This is a lady who has knowingly walked into a meat-grinder to save lives. There aren't too many people who would do that. I hope she knows that millions of us salute her.

16. It was ridiculous tearing down those crosses. CNN covered the
story very sympathetically toward Sheehan on Lou Dobbs this evening. Showed a Iraq vet putting the crosses back up (and also how the crosses were laying on the ground)and the vet gave some comments on what the guy in the truck did. Also the new place they moved is way closer to Bush and they actually showed some cyclists on the Bush ranch...they are now in eyeshot of the Bush ranch. So it was some real negative publicity for the anti- Sheehan group(s).

or even the average Republican looking at the evening news and seeing the crosses laying on the ground with the names of the dead soldiers on each cross will react favorably to that moron who knocked them down. Or the groups who are protesting Sheehan. (There's a silver lining in every cloud? The anti-Sheehan groups really screwed up on this one)

31. What happened was terrible, but the tide is turning, IMO
One rancher offered part of his land to move people to safety. That's one more rancher than offered support yesterday. And I think he qualifies as a redneck too, so broad-brush painting is unfair. Where he stands, others will too.

Actions generate reactions. No news there. But the outpouring of support for Cindy has shocked and awed all the right people. The shameful incident that led to the move may be a flash point for those sitting on the fence to make a stand. As always, Cindy said all the right things, so I refuse to believe bad will lead to worse in this situation. Rather, the bad guys will get more desperate as they find themselves increasingly outside the mainstream in their efforts to paint Cindy and her supporters as just that. And the more desperate and mean they get, the worse it will be not for Cindy but for them and their cause.

There's danger in every movement for change. Just look to history for examples. The stronghearted win time after time as long as they keep their eyes on the prize no matter what or who comes along.

32. In addition 60-70 Crawford Residents filed papers to restrict public
parking, sitting, breathing etc.... in the area where everyone is at Camp Casey. A priceless piece of ditch indeed. it's going to the county commisioner or whoever for the rubber stamp or whatever and then the papers get served or whatever and yer told to move along now, find your freedom down the road.

"We've had enough by god now you pesky peaceniks practice yer free speechin' elsewhere, that ain't the way we do things 'round here".

Cowardly technocratic maneuvering.

"We are in a process of absorbing the factors of the situation we're in and shedding the unreality that dominated at the beginning."

Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 12:58 AM by BrightKnight
She was not forced to move. That is simply a lie.

It is not an anti-Bush peace camp. It is dishonest to describe it in this way. It is Cindy Sheehan's accountability vigil.

Cindy Sheehan has struck a nerve with a diverse group of people seeking accountability from Mr. Bush. While Mrs. Sheehan is gracious and probably shares the views of many of the people that have joined her, her purpose has not changed.

She has paid a very heavy price and has earned the right to ask the hard questions. She deserves simple and honest answers.

We are all paying a heavy price and we all deserve honest answers.

The time for partisan spin is over. Mr. Bush needs to stand up and take responsibility for his actions.
