LAT: Crawford Protesters Don't Find Many Welcome Mats
It appears this is the entirety of the LAT coverage of the mowing down of the crosses --

Protesters Don't Find Many Welcome Mats
By Warren Vieth, Times Staff Writer

CRAWFORD, Texas -- Melissa Harrison thought she was just being neighborly when she let a group of antiwar activists hold a news conference on her property. Then her father, who lives just down the road, began calling her Hanoi Jane.

Even in Crawford, which prides itself on its laid-back lifestyle and friendly people, the good-neighbor thing has its limits....

***

As the town nearest to President Bush's ranch has gone from being a media outpost to an antiwar encampment, frictions between the outsiders and the local population have begun to intensify.

A man from nearby Waco drove to the protest camp in his pickup truck and deliberately ran over small crosses planted along the road to honor the Iraq war dead. Larry Northern, 46, was arrested and charged with criminal mischief.

A sheep rancher whose property is across the road fired a shotgun in the air to protest the protests. Some residents have called on the county commission to do something about the crowd....

1. Laid back lifestyle and friendly people
As long as you agree with their politics, is the way it sounds.

22. As a Texas democrat
living in a blue county, I don't think that's a very fair remark. Democrats in Texas believe in the same things as Democrats in other states, and Republicans in other states are just as much assholes as ours... I think it's a Dem/Repub thing rather than a state thing. And no, it's not a shithole. peace :hippie:

11. I wonder how much money they are bringing into the town?
They are buying food, renting hotels and patronizing the local business' while they are there. Any increase in purchasing in a town that size would have to be noticeable.

This town welcomes ** being a resident because he brought in tourist they didn't have before and increased their property values. As one person in the article said they are "pleased that the proximity of the Bush ranch has revitalized what was once a dying farm town."

This is the other side of that coin and like it or not the people of Crawford will have to accept it.

18. Got some sad news for them. It's gonna be a "dying farm town" AGAIN.
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 07:37 AM by Buns_of_Fire
As soon as Commander Chickenshit is no longer in office, do they REALLY think he intends to settle down there? He'll vamoose back to his gated community in Austin before the dust settles on the 2009 inauguration.

(On edit: It's really hard to misspell a two-letter word, but I somehow manage to do it!)

15. Sound likes these hayseeds
are begging to be invaded. They need to take a good look at a grieving mother up close and personal. They need to experience an in-your-face different point of view. It's time to assert ourselves.

"Theirs is an important issue, but they need to move.
We are a strong, German family community.
We'll weather this. We're not saying stop; we're saying move."

25. Someone should show the Locals the photo's of our troops
searching the Iraqi civilian homes.

Cindi is not invading their homes, she is just asking what all Americans are asking. WHY?

If President Bush cannot answer this simple question from "WE THE PEOPLE," then he should not ask for the lives of our sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, and yes even grandparents.

27. On ABC World News Tonight..they interviewed one resident
He was young...able bodied, driving the required pick-up truck..and he was so freaking SCARED that his lips were shaking.

He drawled a bunch of dribble about "This is George Bush country" and "They's not from here..they's outSIDERS!" and all the typical nonsense.

But what struck me was how he was trying to look mad. And in reality he was fucking TERRIFIED!

They are so frightened. Scared stiff.

It was freaky.

32. Typical that the crosses incident is downplayed.
Where are the headlines that scream: "BUSH SUPPORTER DESECRATES MEMORIAL TO FALLEN SOLDIERS"?

Two lines buried in the middle of a negative story about the protest?
No wonder I cancelled my subscription to this whoring excuse for a newspaper years ago.
