Mother of slain Marine urges mourners to keep supporting troops

Associated Press

WEST CHESTER, Ohio - The mother of a Marine corporal killed in Iraq urged mourners on Wednesday not to let their anger or other feelings over his loss turn them against the U.S. fight in Iraq.

"Honor me in this way," Kathy Dyer said during a memorial service for Lance Cpl. Christopher J. Dyer, 19, one of 16 Marines from a Cleveland-based battalion killed this month in Iraq. She said her son would want people to continue supporting the troops and the war effort.

More than 1,000 people turned out for the service, where friends and family remembered Dyer as a college-bound honor student who had a lifelong interest in the military. They said he chose the Marines as a way to serve his country and to challenge himself.

"He saw this as just another way to measure himself, another test," said his father, John Dyer. "Chris didn't want to be less than the best at anything."

1. this may be the only way she can rationalize his senseless death
May she find comfort somehow, but it can't and shouldn't come from the continued killing of soldiers for a cause which long ago was discredited.

2. I will never stop supporting the troops Mrs Dyer
I'm a veteran who supports the use of force to defend America. That is not what we are doing in Iraq. We are destroying our military, our economy and making body bags a growth industry all because bush is a liar. He didn't get a blowjob from an intern, he got your son killed. I mourn your loss. I hope I'm not mourning the loss of other mothers years from now because bush insists on "staying the course."

4. Thank you, Boss -
what you said...'to defend America' I would die - but no, this isn't what this "conflict" bullshit is about. Not one lick.

6. Welcome Ecoflame - you have really been pacing yourself
Wouldn't it be great if conservatives really did value life?

11. Perfectly put, Boss.
I'm so proud of our armed forces, of their competence and bravery and smarts, and it infuriates me to see them misused by evil idiots.

for Bush's lies.

It's only the government that turns against the troops when a war becomes unpopular. The American people didn't screw the Vietnam Vets - the American government did - and it is the American government that continues to screw the troops.

My sympathy is being sorely tested by those who refuse to learn the truth.

7. I have little sympathy for these "parents"
I'm beginning to find that my sympathy for these people who refuse to
accept the truth is waning.

And everytime one of these "parents" appear in the media saying that their loved one died for freedom, I'm reminded of what my 1st Shirt
used to tell us when I was in the Army: "If you want sympathy you can find it in the dictionary between s**t and syphillis."

I find myself wanting to tell these people exactly what he told us
NCO's on many occasions

snap 'em out of their kool-aid drunken stupor, nothing will.

9. Did he actually care about the Iraq war?
Or did he just see the military as a way to test himself? If it is mostly the latter, then it hardly legitimizes invading a helpless country.

10. Mrs. Dyer's grief has overtaken her senses. If I was religious...
I'd pray for her.

In the meantime, I can only hope her despair lifts soon and she can repair her broken life and wake up to the truth.

12. I support bringing them home. Bu$h`s war crime is not protecting us.
It may be protecting war profiteers from finding real jobs. But that is not the duty our service men and women swore an oath to protect. This mother wants more people to die and suffer needless loss. I do not understand why she cannot see we are fighting a losing battle. It just seems like a sick sort of vanity to prolong this Iraqnam quagmire mess. Oh well, I guess you can`t convince some people of their futility.

13. Translation: Allow more US troops to die to make his death "worthwhile"
That may not be what she means to believe, but that is the policy ramification of what she favors.

If Republican conservatives will not exempt Cindy Sheehan from criticism for being a war critic I see no need to exempt this woman from criticism either--though I will do so respectfully.

And I respectfully disagree with her position.

14. "Supporting the troops' and "supporting the war effort"
mutually exclusive, IMHO. One does not "support' the troops by insisting that they continue struggling in an illegal and immoral invasion for profit.

in two years. I would be very interested to hear how these people feel when they aren't in shock.
