(Cupertino) Teacher resigns after settling dispute over religious material
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2005/08/17/BAteacher17.DTL

An elementary school teacher who sued the Cupertino Union School District last fall, saying his employer tried to limit his instructional materials because he was a Christian, has resigned his job just days after reaching a legal settlement.

Stephen J. Williams, who taught fifth grade at Stevens Creek Elementary School, resigned Monday and was packing up with his wife and two infant children for a move to Bend, Ore., Williams said in an interview today.

... Williams, who describes himself as a "born again disciple of Christ," said he had been leaning toward leaving since the spring, when he learned he would be transferred to another school and wouldn't be able to teach history. However, he said he was advised by the Alliance Defense Fund, which was sponsoring his lawsuit, not to resign until negotiations were complete.

He does not have a job lined up in Oregon and said it is unlikely he will return to teaching in public schools.

3. As a former Cupertino resident for 9 years, I'm glad for my ex-neighbors.
I lived walking distance from Stevens Creek Elementary. I'm glad it's a better school now.

6. Absolutely nobody is as sad about as I am. The valley is "home."
It always will be. I love that area. I miss Rancho San Antonio with a passion. I miss Vivi's Falafels with a hunger. I miss Skyline Drive and Alice's Restaurant with a Weekend Jones. I'll always be homesick for the West Valley and the whole Bay Area.
