Tonight, in the shadow of the White House, approximately four-hundred people gathered for a vigil in support of Cindy Sheehan, the mother of Casey Sheehan who was killed in Iraq. Sheehan is maintaining a vigil outside of President Bush's Texas ranch while the President is on a five week vacation.

In contrast to the hundreds in support of Sheehan at the there were less than a dozen pro-war demonstrators gathered under a banner that read "God Bless our Soldiers, Liberating the World of One Tyrant at a Time," reported PageOneQ photographer and blogger, Joe Tresh. (Mr. Tresh's blog is Joe Tresh's Washington)
....
Here's and excerpt of the mom's speech. Complete speech in article.

"My name is Gilda. I am a member of MFSO - Military Families Speak Out - and I have a son who is an active duty Marine. He was deployed to Iraq during the bloody assault on Fallujah in November. One-hundred thirty-seven of our sons and daughters and countless Iraqis died in that assault.
...
"President Bush, meet with Cindy. Tell that mother in that pathetic ditch by your house just exactly why her son died. Tell her how the war is going and what your plan is. Explain to her that 'taking the fight to them' was really a brilliant way to get the naive and ignorant to fall unquestioningly behind you. Tell her how through your incompetence and at great expense in resources and human life, we destroyed Iraq, giving the Iraqis an infinitely worse hell than anyone could have ever imagined.

2. Heck we had that many at our candlelight vigil
It was beautiful, I am so glad I attended. There was a real cross section of society there, at least 450 attended. People driving by honked and waved. Never heard one nasty remark even from a passing car.

14. At the end of ours someone drove by and shouted an obscenity.
Otherwise if was a very uplifting experience. Very low key and spiritual. The place where it was held is less a political forum and more of a spiritual refuge.

4. What a contrast with the demonstrations of the '60s.
The demographics are different. Back then it was mostly young people. Today, the protesters are from all age groups. Then, it was mostly students or people who lived on the fringe of society. Today's protesters are mostly middle class -- not upper middle class, but middle class working people and professionals.

A lot of clergy not only spoke out back then, they led many of the protests. There are fewer clergy speaking out today, and rarely are they really leading or organizing.

The protesters of today spell a lot more trouble for Bush than the protesters in the '60s meant for Johnson and Nixon. There is less violence today, but the people protesting, by their demographics are going to get a lot more respect. The protesters of today don't have to be violent because they will be listened to when they talk to their neighbors.

Every person at a vigil tonight will reach at least 15 people, persuade at least 3 or 4 people to agree with them and support their point of view and maybe even join the next vigil. Each of them will also get maybe six or more to at least move to the fence and be less judgmental. In spite of the anti-Sheehan slant in the press, the vision of one ordinary person who is willing to speak from his or her conscience is very effective, especially if that person speaks quietly and with conviction. It will take time, but Bush's lies will be recognized for what they are by the vast majority of Americans before long.

10. Interesting observation about the demographics of the current protesters
Your correct, the people speaking out today do represent more working middle class Americans. It's not the more easily dismissed "angry youth" that are taking a stand, but the backbone of society.

We are the same person that the average joe has been working along side of for the past 20 years. This could cause their attempt to label us as radicals and haters of America to backfire on them. Mr. Average Joe already knows us, our kids play together, we shop at the same grocery and attend the same community functions. We have a distinct advantage here.

12. Pray don't forget, that our OWN party
characterized the "aware" faction of us as wild-eyed, birkenstock wearing radicals, and dems as well as righties bought it.

Anyone attending a Dean or Kucinich event could have seen what "demographic" the anti-Iraq invasion folks belong to.

I think that Cindy HAS touched a nerve. We are coming out of the woodwork now, and seeing that we are NOT alone, nor are we "radical" in any sense of the word.

We are Patriots, who's country has been hijacked.

16. They certainly have, to fight multiple front "winnable" wars
We lost another four soldiers today. Do these war supporters have a number they can provide us representing a tolerance threshold for US deaths in Bush's wars? If so, what is it? How many US soldiers are these duffuses willing to lose to keep Bush's war machine propped up?
