Baghdad warns bombers seek civil war as four US troops die
BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq said the rush-hour bombings that rocked Baghdad sought to create a sectarian crisis in the war-torn country as fresh rebel violence killed 12, including four US soldiers.

.......

The government said the bombings were aimed at triggering a civil war.

"The bombs exploded in a Shiite dominated area of Baghdad, and the message that they (rebels) wanted to send was that the government is incapable of protecting you (Shiites) from them," government spokesman Leith Kubba said.

"Such a criminal act will definitely arouse passion among Shiites -- they (insurgents) want the Shiites to attack the Sunnis and that will serve the insurgents' purpose. They want to trigger sectarian crisis."

Iraq's ousted Sunni Arab elite is believed to form the backbone of the raging insurgency that has ravaged Iraq since the ousting of Saddam Hussein.

1. the puppet government is wrong again
the bombings are aimed at driving out the occupiers and killing the collaborators. They have since day one. Bring the troops home.

2. Collaborators include the currently installed govt.
Edited on Thu Aug-18-05 02:45 PM by LiberalVoice
Anybody that thinks the insurgents will stop once the US soldiers have left is dead wrong. This is about the occupation by US troops and the installation of a Sunni controlled govt. in Iraq.

4. most of the installed Government haven't lived in Iraq in years
I never said the bombings would stop if US soldiers left. But they would stop bombing US soldiers if they left.

7. are our US troops protecting them now??
They are there supposedly for security and stabilization but are accomplishing neither. As a matter of fact Iraqis are being slaughtered by US troops ,US Paid mercenaries and the insurgents in multiples daily. They want the occupiers out and I don't blame them.

There are many other options available to help the Iraqis other than the current fucked up "no plan plan".

19. Only partially correct
The bombings are also aimed at causing as much chaos as possible. Once the troops are out of Iraq, the various insurgants will use as much violence as possible to capture their own slice of power within the country.

20. The synchronized bombings yesterday (the day before?)
didn't target US troops. They are, I would think, the immediate referent of the article.

Only one bomb could possibly be construed as targeting governmental employees--police.

The second was just against 'collaborators' who were on their way to work. Apparently working to sustain any kind of economy is collaboration.

The third included injured and medics. Apparently trying to keep collaborators healthy enough to keep stores and other such services open--all non-governmental--is also collaboration.

Which leaves very, very few non-collaborators in the country. Makes for a very simple--yea, simplistic--calculus.

6. Yah and the attack on Fort Sumter was 'seeking' civil war.
This spin is just silly.

Obviously if they are attacking, the civil war has already begun.

14. everyone with half a brain
knew that taking out Saddam-- the only glue holding Iraq together-- would bring on a civil war in that country sooner or later.

That was one of THE biggest reasons for staying out of that country and for believing that there could be no overall humanitarian benefit to attacking Iraq.

(Not that Bush was even justifying the war on humanitarian grounds way back-- before the war was started).

11. Sounds like the German Army in the Battle for Berlin.
By the time of the Battle for Berlin, the German army was a Shadow of its former self. Stalin on the other hand wanted Berlin so he ordered two of his Commanders to take Berlin. It was NOT Stalin's intention for these armies to work together but for each to race to take Berlin. Thus you had two well equipped and Supplied Armies fighting each other TO TAKE BERLIN, while the German Army was at best a minor concern. Russian forces fought Russian forces (Who happened to be from the "Other" Army) more than they fought German Forces. Hitler tried to make this sound like Great German Army Victories, even while the main fighting did not even involve German Forces.

Thus the Government of Baghdad sounds like Hitler and his Commanders during those last days of WWII. Two Armies are fighting but neither is under the control of the Government but the Government wants to give the impression it is still "in charge". Thus you get stupid comments like this one. i.e. We can protect you, not those other two armies who actually have troops willing to fight. More wishful thinking than reality.
