Cheney mourns Iraq war deaths, urges perseverance

CRAWFORD, Texas, Aug 18 (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney on Thursday offered sympathy to the families of fallen soldiers who face "irreplaceable" losses but insisted the Iraq war was worth fighting despite growing American unease.

Cheney spoke in Springfield, Missouri, the day after supporters of anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan held a series of candlelight vigils around the country to call attention to her demands for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

The vice president did not mention Sheehan, whose 24-year-old son Casey was killed in combat in Iraq, but in an address to veterans he spoke at length about the difficulties faced by families like Sheehan's.

Sheehan has become a magnet for anti-war protesters who have crowded around her since she began her vigil on Aug. 6 near President George W. Bush's ranch, where he is on a monthlong vacation.

It seems to me you are the exact opposite of a great leader; There are many causes for which you will kill, but there is no cause for which you would die.

7. Cheney wants war, that is his business and he will keep it going
for as long as we allow him to continue. He is also primarily interested it seems in

engaging in any means necessary to achieve such domination over this country, even if it means bringing us to our knees.

Where did that 9 billion go and what is it being used for?

30. I am surprised at DUers
rudeness toward Dick Cheney when this sociopath is obviously grieving. I would refer to him as 'Richard' but to me he has always been a Dick. Anyone else agree? He just doen't look like a Richard does he? For some uncanny reason he certainly looks like a Dick though. He's got those Dick eyes and those Dick teeth not to mention that Dick head.
Nope. No matter what he or anyone else says, he will always be a Dick in my book. My book is a big heavy book by the way and I am respectfully slamming it shut.

44. E.L. Doctorow re Bush & mourning.
At the Easthampton Star.

http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0920-13.htm

The Unfeeling President
by E.L. Doctorow

I fault this president for not knowing what death is. He does not suffer the death of our 21-year-olds who wanted to be what they could be. On the eve of D-Day in 1944 General Eisenhower prayed to God for the lives of the young soldiers he knew were going to die. He knew what death was. Even in a justifiable war, a war not of choice but of necessity, a war of survival, the cost was almost more than Eisenhower could bear.

But this president does not know what death is. He hasn't the mind for it. You see him joking with the press, peering under the table for the weapons of mass destruction he can't seem to find, you see him at rallies strutting up to the stage in shirt sleeves to the roar of the carefully screened crowd, smiling and waving, triumphal, a he-man.

He does not mourn. He doesn't understand why he should mourn. He is satisfied during the course of a speech written for him to look solemn for a moment and speak of the brave young Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

But you study him, you look into his eyes and know he dissembles an emotion which he does not feel in the depths of his being because he has no capacity for it. He does not feel a personal responsibility for the 1,000 dead young men and women who wanted to be what they could be.

Well worth reading.

I can easily see Bush and so on mourning, because they don't have a clue.

But Cheney doesn't care, he has never cared from the start. That man is as black as death, the ultimate pretender. He's making billions off the deal, money's the only maker this guy will ever meet not morals.

Cindy is getting to him? Is he trying to keep up the act?

50. Dead Man Talking
He may enjoy the view from his mountain of money, and he may enjoy shooting dazed, farm-raised little birds, but for all of his byzantine power, he can't control these events. As he clings to life, he's won everything he ever wanted except ultimate success and respect. The appearance of control can be maintained for now, but he's smart enough to know that his policies are failing and he'll not be around to put them right. Doom whispers at him from every gurney, and rage as he might against the sluggishness of the world, deep down he knows it's a rearguard action.

He'll probably die before too much humiliation, but even if the control of the media can keep him from being reviled too much as he goes amid brewing scandals, his lot is one of odious failure, and somewhere inside, he knows it.

The true ugliness of this man is astounding.

51. From what I've read.....
The ugly vile nature of this Vice President is nothing compared to certain individuals in foreign governments.....

http://www.arcticbeacon.com

There's apparently alot of Pakistani government officials like, Ariel Sharon of Israel who make Osama Bin Laden look like a child in comparison. The more I hear about these people the more afraid I am for everyone, they've committed mass war crimes and according to Sibel Edmonds have been secretly running our state department!

52. The White House Is In Reactive Mode
To offset a possible real discussion on our part in this war, the WH has rolled out propangandist-in-chief, VP Cheney. Their problem is not being on the offensive. They are trying to change the conversation by attacking the credibility of those who oppose the war. This cannot be allowed to happen.

It is important that the loyal opposition does not put all its eggs in one basket. We must develop leadership besides Cindy Sheehan. I firmly believe that sometimes out of bad news something positive can happen. There are many talented people who are camped out at Camp Casey. Their voices now must become louder as we support them in her needed absence.

As is happening here Mr. Cheney's credibility and lack of sincerity must be pushed onto the front pages of our newspapers. The lack of leadership and concern must be made evident to as many of our citizens as possible.
