Conservative Memos (John Roberts' Reagan Era Memos)

BY TOM BRUNE
WASHINGTON BUREAU

August 19, 2005

WASHINGTON - In internal White House memos written in the 1980s, John G. Roberts often showed his conservative edge, offering critical assessments of government programs for women and minorities, making jokes about Hispanics and discussing how to "defund the left."

<snip>

In some memos, for example, he made jokes about Hispanics and women. For a 1983 Reagan interview in Spanish Today, he said, "I think this audience would be pleased that we are trying to grant legal status to their illegal amigos."

He also joked in 1982 about Kickapoo Indians, saying "a group of them made Newsweek by choosing to live in squalid conditions beneath the International Bridge in Eagle Pass, Texas, rather than their Mexican homeland."

In a 1984 memo advising on how to respond to an eccentric letter to his boss, Fred Fielding, asking if all property had been placed in a public trust, Roberts began, "One Ramon L. Rivera of Los Angeles (where else?) ... "

3. The guy is among the ugliest of the uglies on the right...
"G. Roberts often showed his conservative edge"...

After reading the article there is a very logical conflation of words here: conservative = racist

7. "conservative edge" = elitist bigotry (NewsDay euphemism)
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 10:53 AM by TahitiNut
More disturbing than such gratuitous remarks in writing is the tacit assumption of finding his audience in agreement with such bigotry. This guy's not stupid - he knows these "internal White House memos" are addressed to people who share his elitist bigotry.

8. Very good point on the audience of the memos.
When I read the article I couldn't help but think that a then young Roberts was actually writing these things to score points with his superiors.

Life in the Country Club, working his way up the social ladder...

Bring us another round of drinks, amigo. Yuck, yuck.

I am astonished they are trying to pass off Roberts as moderate or independent. He's just another pig in the Reagan-Bush Animal Farm.

13. So this proves our assertions that the repukes are comprised of racists
and bigots, and if they are not racists and bigots, which this proves they all are, they are selfish and greedy liars.

Where are all the repuke apologists now?

3...2...1...

16. It's clearly a persuasive condemnation of that administration.
There can be no question whatsoever that such expressed bigotry found an agreeable audience. There can also be little question that it has continued to find such agreement withing GOP circles ... otherwise, Roberts would not be the nominee.

If I were on the Judiciary Committee, this is the point I'd be hammering away at. He's a bigot who's nominated by bigots. I'd be just that assertive.

he was young and trying to get ahead in "conservative" circles. he was trying to impress by proving that he was as racist as his bosses.
