ANGLETON, Texas (Reuters) - A Texas jury in the first Vioxx case to go to trial on Friday found pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. negligent in the death of man taking the drug and awarded his widow $253 million in damages.

The stunning verdict was certain to be greatly reduced under Texas law, but it sent Merck's stock sharply down as investors feared it could set a precedent for more than 4,200 lawsuits charging the company hid the heart attack and stroke risks of the big-selling painkiller.

Merck pulled the drug off the market in September last year after it said it became clear its long-term usage could double users' risk of heart attack or stroke.

It shares fell $2.35, or 7.73 percent, to $28.06 and exerted the largest drag on the Dow, although the average rose 4.3 to 10559.23.

My husband has had one. (Over two years ago.) CNN has interviewed a doctor who has identified it as a TIA, and it really isn't a stroke. (I repeatedly asked my husband's doctors if the term "mild stroke" was accurate and they said no. )
The key is the "T" --it stands for "transient," which means the condition only hangs on long enough to cause dizziness and other temporarysymptoms, and then clears up...causing the condition to reverse itself. I'm sure they've MRI'd the senators neck to see if there are any residual problems in his carotid artery.
If my husband's doctor's were correct, it's likely to be caused by stress plus physical fatigue, and it's a good idea to loosen one's shirt collars. (I'm not kidding.)
Although it can be a forewarning of a real stroke...it doesn't have to be. Senator Reid should get some good rest during this break. Let's not get too worried yet.

Jane Alexander quite her job at the National Endowment for the Arts after her son-in-law had a heart attack (survived). She said that when she went to visit her heart doctor there would be a number of her high-level enemies in the heart doctors office.

Very heart-breaking conditions for any job on Capitol Hill or NIH or any government agency.

CRAWFORD, Texas - War protesters camping in roadside ditches near President Bush’s ranch have accepted a neighbor’s offer to stay on his property, and their vigil will be joined this week by FBI whistleblower Coleen Rowley and by another mother whose soldier-son died in Iraq.

The neighbor, Army veteran Fred Mattlage, said he sympathizes with participants in the vigil started Aug. 6 by Cindy Sheehan, who lost her 24-year-old son in Iraq last year. The makeshift camp off the winding, two-lane road to Bush’s ranch has angered residents and snarled traffic.

“I just think people should have a right to protest without being harassed,” Mattlage told The Associated Press. “And I’m against the war. I don’t think it’s a war we need to be in.....

but there are also times when they seem to have no affect in terms of a person's ability to do things. and people only know they had it after a doctor tells them. it looks like and hopefully this is the case with Reid.

If he gets past having a stroke over the next couple of days, then the risk of having another one drops to about 10% for the next few months, if it was from stenosis of a carotid artery. They have to make sure there is no hemorrhage in the brain. It can be considered a warning event for a bigger episode if it isn't diagnosed and treated first.

surgeries, and they went very well. They'll check for degree of occlusion if that is the problem. Last I heard, the surgery isn't done unless the artery is highly occluded.

The bad news: About one-third of the people who experience a TIA will later suffer a stroke.

A TIA can serve as a warning of a potential stroke and an opportunity to take steps to prevent it, the Mayo Clinic reports.
A look at transient ischemic attacks:
Q. What is a transient ischemic attack?

I have three immediate family members who are stroke survivors and know that higher profiled stroke survivors and their subsequent successes are important to all stroke survivors.
