Kansas attorney general sues to block state-funded abortions

KNIGHT RIDDER NEWS SERVICE

August 19, 2005

TOPEKA, Kan. – Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline has sued Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and two other state officials, seeking to block state-funded abortions and establish under Kansas law that life begins at conception.

The lawsuit, filed yesterday, claims abortion violates Section 1 of the Kansas Constitution, which guarantees all people "equal and inalienable natural rights, among which are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

The Kansas House of Representatives ordered the lawsuit three years ago. Abortion opponents hope eventually to challenge the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which legalized abortion.

1. I take it he wants the money to go to state funded birth control access
for teens and the poor to great birth control - accessible & free?

Otherwise this man will have created more reproductive crisis than he stops.

15. You say that is if you think he cares or something.
They don't care; the only thing they care about is controlling women, incouding punishing them for their sexuality -- esp. when it's allowed outside their narrow, approved borders (aka: pre- or extramarital sex).

2. Would be an interesting precedent, not using personal taxes for things
that violate an individual moral belief.

I support not using my taxes to fight wars against innocent people.

3. Sign me up for that too
I have no problem letting the conservatives opt out of paying for the National Endowment for the Arts if I can opt out of paying for the war.

21. Santorum is from Pennsylvania. You're thinking of Brownback.
On the other hand, Dr. Tiller in Wichita is one of something like three providers nationally of third-trimester abortions.

5. "Our intent is to quit paying for the killing ..." !!

......"He continues to use his office to push extreme ideologies on the state of Kansas," said Traci Gleason of Planned Parenthood of Kansas. "We feel it's unconscionable to fail to provide health care for poor women."

During the fiscal year that ended June 30, seven abortions in Kansas were paid for through Medicaid at a cost of $1,908, according to the state Division of Health Policy and Finance. The previous year, there were three Medicaid-funded abortions at a cost of $1,000.

Medicaid is a federal-and state-funded program that covers health care costs for low-income people........

"We aren't out to hurt the poor people for needed medical care," he said. "Our intent is to quit paying for the killing of what can be proven to be human beings." .....

What naral should do is immediately start a class action lawsuit against the arch diocess of Kansas and this prick. If that doesn't work well I used to be a janitor I know how to dispose of things.

9. Why are the dems on the losing side of this issue
and is it so important that we should lose general elections and tens of thousands of innocent foreigners die?

I personally don't think it's worth it. The dem party is taking it in the as* and there are hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of single-subject voters who happen to be catholic.

14. That's THEIR problem....
you vote on a single subject at your peril, as we have observed. But you NEVER stop fighting for your rights and the rights of others.

17. First They Came For The...
Homosexuals should have equal rights supporters. And I didn't speak up because I wasn't gay and didn't care if they could marry.

Then they came after the Pro-Choice platform, and I didn't speak up because abortion wasn't an issue to me.

Then they came for the environmentalists, and I didn't speak up because I thought a lot of them were a little weird anyway.

Then they came for the gun control advocates. And the social progressives. And the pro-Union/Labor factions.

Maybe I don't think it's worth it to go back to a time where women are treated as property and die from back alley butchers or suffer ill effects of repeated childbirth just because some Dems are harping on this "losing" issue of the Iraq War. The thing is, we're Democrats and different parts of the platform are more important to different Democrats. I don't think we should cave on the issues, but we must be smarter about the way we discuss them.

18. that's why the Dems dragged their feet
on civil rights. There were millions of single-issue voting Southern whites. Just because a position is popular doesn't make it right.

22. Oh, yes, let's forget about rights and ethics, ...
and become political whores like the GOP.

Were the Dem Party to stop supporting abortion rights, it will die altogether; because some of us will do whatever we can to stomp it into the ground.

16. If Life Begins At Conception
Can pregnant women apply to get a social security number for the embryo or fetus?

Does a pregnant woman need to get separate health insurance coverage for the "unborn" child?

What about life insurance? If something happens, ie: a miscarriage, can she collect a death benefit on the poor little thing?

Oh, wait, if there is a miscarriage can she be charged with involuntary manslaughter?

Anyway, what if continuing a pregnancy would endanger the mother's life, who decides which life is more important?

20. This is about 'state funded' abortion, but
what about agencies that get state money?

My sister had to be put in the Meninger Clinic for some psychiatric problems some years back, and they forced an abortion on her in order to be admitted. With Meninger being one of the crown jewels of the state, you know they're gettin $$ from Topeka.

27. Good Grief
I hope your sister is OK now. What a horrible thing to go through!

I don't think forced abortions are accpetable, it is Pro-Choice, not Pro-Abortion.

But that brings up another point, certain psychiatric drugs are very, very harmful to an embryo or fetus but may be necessary to help people with certain problems. If life begins at conception, what happens to these psychiatric patients who become pregnant?

23. Kansas had an AG in the sixties who arrested train personnel
for serving liquor as the club car passed through dry Kansas. He then tried to arrest airline attendants as they flew over dry Kansas. The Feds explained the limit of his authority and he was defeated at the next election by embarrassed Jayhawkers.
I don't know whether it is progress that they have given up on stopping people from drinking to focus on stopping state funded abortions, but the constant is that the good folks of Missouri still get a chuckle from out country cousins, even though it is now far from a laughing matter.

24. It kind of makes one wonder "What's the Matter With Kansas?".
I suppose there is a possibility for change. Like in, "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time." Let's hope the wise Abe Lincoln was right. :)
