Vote-Rigging Alleged in Pakistan Elections
Vote-Rigging Alleged in Pakistan Elections

Saturday August 20, 2005 9:46 PM

By MUNIR AHMAD

Associated Press Writer

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) - Candidates supported by Pakistan's ruling party apparently swept violence-marred municipal elections amid allegations of vote rigging, though the U.S.-allied government insists the polls were free and fair.

At least 20 people were killed and more than 200 others wounded nationwide during the first phase of elections Thursday, police and media reports said. The elections were held in 53 districts.

The second and final phase of the elections will be held Aug. 25.

In Pakistan, elections for choosing mayors and councilors are held every four years. Municipal officials play a key role in the country's politics and supervise development work in their areas.

3. Diebold machines are in many countries.
I wonder if they are in Pakistan. I think not.

...In Pakistan, elections have traditionally been associated with trouble, violence and allegations of rigging. E-voting can help increase the number of younger voters, and encourage citizens to vote who have access to the internet at home, and are deterred by the long lines and delays associated with traditional voting. Expatriates can take part in elections easily. Most significantly, the human error factor in counting can be replaced with computer error rate – the best reliability possible. In Pakistan, there has been some research into e-voting, but we do not, as yet, have anything tangible. Until CNIC and computer generated passports are implemented properly and made customer friendly, we cannot seriously consider e-voting as a viable option. The decision to integrate e-voting into mainstream national elections will not be an easy one as testing and training are required to ensure the reliability of the system selected for use, and implementation could create serious problems...
