Hagel finds Nebraskans troubled by Iraq
http://www.journalstar.com/articles/2005/08/21/local/doc4307c66d60b87111055030.txt

<snip>Hagel, who had warned early and often about the perils of a precipitate U.S. military attack without broad international support and planning for the aftermath, said a series of bad decisions has left the United States in "deep trouble in Iraq."

U.S. military withdrawal probably will, and should, begin next year, Hagel said. But he said he'd not support any firm timetable that ties the hands of President Bush.

The future of Iraq now must be determined by the Iraqi people, he said.

The end result, he said, probably will be some form of Islamic republic. But there's a 50-50 chance Iraq will implode as Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds vie for power or autonomy.

Already, Iran exercises more influence in Iraq than the United States does, Hagel said.

1. Hagel is talking on both sides of his mouth on this one. Bush wants no
one to be any restrictions on his will!!

6. Nebraksaman speak with forked tongue
He voted for the god-damned war. But, recently he's held his fickle finger up into the prevailing wind and 'seen the light'. His prez. ambitions require that he take this stance--at the same time pouring out the Vietnam war-vet patriot pap and refusing to set any concrete goals for troop withdrawal. Don't believe this ES&S vote stealing snake.

5. This paper needs a copy editor is the worst way
If this article provided any example, the Lincoln Journal Star needs either better reporters or a better copy editor.

Be that as it may, I really don't know that much about Hagel. I've checked some congressional scorecards and from what I've read he may be what might be called a "true conservative" rather than a neocon.

What's the scoop on Hagel's politics?

4. I've said it once, I'll say it again. Hagel will say ANYTHING that
benefits Hagel.

He is NOT the paragon of lost republican virtue that people seem to delude themselves into thinking he is. ES&S. Does that ring a bell?
