U.S. and Afghan Forces Kill 40 Militants
KABUL, Afghanistan - Hundreds of U.S. Marines and Afghan forces killed more than 40 suspected militants in the past week in an operation against insurgents who had inflicted the deadliest blow on American forces since the Taliban regime was ousted nearly four years ago, a military spokesman said.

The operation, which concluded over the weekend, was aimed at rebels believed responsible for twin attacks, including the downing of a helicopter, that killed 19 U.S. troops in late June.

"It was successful," Lt. Col. Jerry O'Hara told The Associated Press. "We had over 29 separate engagements with enemy forces that resulted in over 40 enemy killed in action and many others wounded."

1. I'm really uneasy about this. Usually when you hear about a number
of 'enemy' combatants being killed it translates into there now being a number of dead women, children, and old people.

U.S. says 105 militants dead in recent Afghan action
KABUL (Reuters) - U.S. and Afghan government forces have killed more than 100 militants over the past few weeks in aggressive operations aimed at ensuring security for an election next month, the U.S. military said on Monday.

U.S. forces have in recent months been suffering their worst casualty rate in Afghanistan since arriving in late 2001 to force the Taliban from power.

"ANA and coalition forces continue to aggressively establish enduring security," U.S. spokeswoman Lieutenant Cindy Moore told a briefing in Kabul, referring to the U.S.-trained Afghan National Army.

About 65 militants have been killed in 25 clashes in Zabul province in the south over the past week, while about 40 were killed in fighting in Kunar province in the east over the last several weeks, she said.

3. General: We killed ten times as many of them!
Reporter: How did you determine that number, sir?

General: Uh, we multiplied, stupid...
