North Iowa Guard units called to active duty
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 02:50 PM by lebkuchen
(Sorry--I should have put this in the Iowa forum. Next time...)

Nearly 600 Iowa National Guard troops — including from units in Charles City, Algona and Iowa Falls — have been called to active duty for Operation Iraqi Freedom and the war on terrorism.

In all, about 575 soldiers have been called up with an anticipated date of active duty in October. Specific numbers for North Iowa were not released because of privacy and other issues, an official said Sunday.

Its mission is to conduct close combat with enemy forces and provide security.

Under the latest order, the soldiers will be activated for 18 months and will be sent to Camp Shelby, Miss., for training before heading to their duty stations.

Since receiving an alert status letter in July, the the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry has been on "stop loss," which means all members must remain attached until the end of this deployment, Luft said.
