Iraq constitution received, no vote for 3 days

BAGHDAD, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Iraq's parliament received a draft of the country's constitution less than five minutes before a midnight deadline on Monday, but there was no vote on the highly contested document.

Parliamentary speaker Hajim al-Hassani told members a text of the document had been received but said the final wording would have to be worked out within the coming three days.

The draft of the constitution was due to be presented by Aug. 15, but a week ago parliament voted to extend the deadline by one week. The speaker said he expected remaining differences to be ironed out in the coming days.

2. I wonder if W cares.
A federation would be good though then we'd only have to install one ruler at a time.

5. XTremely Curious!!! Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and the other nut
cases have been STRANGELY silent about their beloved leader allowing
an ISLAMIC state to be set up in Iraq. I guess they have been told to stay in line and shut the fuck up!

12. Its funny you say that.
I was just flipping Through the channels today and bumped into the 700 club and decided to see what the loonies toons were saying.
and Pat was going off about how can the liberals in this country are not saying any thing about the possible theocracy in Iraq but complaining about the good and just people here trying to help all to christ in this country and how were all fake for not standing up against that possibility of iraq becoming another Iran.
After that I did a double take and wondered were I fell through the rip in space time to enter bizzaro world. ( I'm all most certain now that it's in my up stairs closet were I keep my spare flux capacitor) :)

after that they went to pray for * so he would appoint Robbert's to the SC after that I had to have a drink and promptly changed the channel

11. I think they'll say anything to fit
the headlines they want. Doesn't matter what really happens. If they don't like what's happening (extension, authorized or not), they just won't mention it.

Any day now, we'll be hearing how another mission has been accomplished. Something I was reading last night made me think the Iraqi civil war had clearly begun. Can't remember who wrote that.

14. What a sketchy sleight of hand. Technically there's a piece of paper
that's been presented, but "final wording" needs to be "worked out" in the next three days.

Pretty transparent stall...

16. NYTimes: Iraqi leaders agree to disagree
or something to that effect...

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/22/international/middleeast/22cnd-iraq.html?hp&ex=1124769600&en=593e756db6d0d056&ei=5094&partner=homepage

"The constitution is finished," said the deputy speaker for the National Assembly, Hussein Shahrastani.

But officials said they would need another three days to resolve disagreements over three key issues: federalism, treatment of former Bath Party members, and the number of votes required to elect the prime minister and president. If the rival parties cannot come to an agreement in that time, each party would be free to take its own position on the constitution, said Hajim M. al-Hassani, the speaker of Parliament.

19. BushCo: "another step forward"
In Washington, the White House welcomed "another step forward" in the
work on the constitution.

"The progress made over the past week has been impressive," said a
statement, adding that democracy was "difficult and often slow, but
leads to durable agreements".

I'd sure hate to see their idea of a setback.
Iraq is FUBAR.
