Thousands Protest Bush, Iraq War In Salt Lake City
Thousands Protest Bush, Iraq War In Salt Lake City

Bush spoke to more than 6,000 people at the annual convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, while three blocks away about 2,000 people gathered to protest Bush administration policies and the war in Iraq.

SNIP:

Salt Lake resident Hugh Musser, 74, said he was a Korean War veteran who came to the protest because of ``the lies about this war and the reasons we went into it.''

``I'm so opposed to our administration. I'm not politically motivated, I'm an independent. I think we have really lost our democracy,'' Musser said.

SNIP:

One of the event's organizers, Aaron Davis with a group called Veterans for Peace, said he filed a permit for a gathering of 1,000 people. Thirty minutes into the three-hour event Monday, he said he knew there would be that many and more.

3. I'd agree with your friend.
3,000 sounds about right. Of course the media LOVES to underreport these numbers. ABC News said that there were only around 500 protesters, some stories have 1,000 and this one showed 2,000. From the photos I took you can clearly see the park was packed.

I also noticed they didn't show the protesters either. After all the lies and all the deaths, they are STILL protecting that idiot. Unbelievable. :argh: :banghead:

12. W-O-W. This is so awesome, I can hardly believe it.
The wheels are coming off this damnable administration. After 5 years of waiting......

waiting................

You're right. I've heard recently that people who would NEVER participate in a demonstration, are getting ready. Older people, retirees, young people. Lots of them. Including us.

We're taking this country back.

9. Hatch called us all nuts.
The local news interviewed him and asked him about the protests and he said something like "They're nut cases."

I wonder if he'd like to tell that to the woman that lost her child over in Iraq who spoke today at the protest?

14. I have to tell you something
I know two people total who lived in Utah. One is a woman about 30 who grew up there and she left about 5 years ago. She HATED it as she was turning liberal and her parents are still there and deep conservatives. She said whenever she tries to get them to talk politics they just clam up.

The other is a guy who went to mining school there and he was in a dorm with mormons and he came from my state and wanted to learn but also drink and party. He had a rough time.

It's a beautiful state; I have been there a few times, but there's something about it that always scares me.

I am glad the rally was such a success. Hatch, what a GOP dickbrain.

8. Three Cheers for Salt Lake!!!
I know that's your hometown, Sean, so good on ya! Well played, Utah.

Been through Salt Lake once back in 1997. Showed up in town opening night of the State Fair, much to my consternation. Great little city, and damn beautiful.

17. I guess you can't put everyone in a category....
Good for SLC! I am shocked - but in a great way!! If Utah can wake up, maybe the rest of the Red States can.
Good going to everyone involved in today's protest. And to Rocky - you are the REAL Rocky!! From South Florida to Utah - we love you protestors. Keep fighting the good fight. I am sure it took a lot of courage to go out there today!! :yourock:

35. Thanks!
I want to thank everyone for welcoming me here. Actually I have poked around this site for quite a while but this was my first post. Seeing the reddest of the red states rally against Bush made my heart leap for joy and I felt that DU was the best place to express how I felt. Hopefully, the country is coming out of the fog of the past few years and can see these people for what they are. Thugs, murderers, liars and (as Mike Malloy refers to them) a Crime Family. I have to tell you that some of the signs that the good folks of SLC held up were very novel. I loved the "Send Jenna" one. I also loved "Rocky - American Hero, Bush - American Zero".
Keep it up guys. The Shrub is in Idaho today (the second reddest state?) and hopefully there will be more and more protests. Impeachment proceedings need to be started and these thugs need to be where they belong - BEHIND BARS!
Anyway, thank you very much for making me feel welcome here. Rock On Blue States!!:woohoo:

30. And you're so right too
about this giving hope to others of us in red states.

I have been mourning the passing of a very blue Oklahoma about ten years, actually. OK was once as Democratic a state as ever there was, and we always had Dem governors. Now the Repugs totally count on us to vote their way, and unfortunately they are safe doing so.

--Or they HAVE been safe doing so up until now! Maybe the fact that Utah can have that many war protesters turning out will give Okies with similar feelings the hope and the courage they need to start getting back to our longtime Democratic roots!

And welcome to DU from me, too, castleb7! :hi: I'm loving it here!

Most patriotic place I've found in a long time.... :patriot:

33. Hey! Welcome to DU!
Yeah, if this is going on in Utah, for heaven's sakes, it's going on EVERYWHERE, and probably in far greater numbers.

Go ahead and call us names, orrin, if that's the best you can do. We've got a few for you, too, sweetie. And for the "lord of war" you worship.

Welcome, castleb7 - glad you're here! Now, get to work.

You can protest but you can't be seen.

I saw many network and cable news shows cover the speech but not a word about any protest.
