Feinstein to Question Roberts on Abortion
-----------------
By BETH FOUHY
Associated Press Writer
-----------------
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose vote on Supreme Court nominee John Roberts could guide other Democrats, said Monday she will scrutinize his views on abortion and congressional authority to set social policy.

She called the impending debate over Roberts' nomination a "big, big deal."

"I don't think in the last couple of decades there has been a Supreme Court appointment that could more tip the balance of the court," Feinstein said in a speech to several hundred Silicon Valley business executives. "That's how mega this vote is."

(snip)

"I happen to feel that it would be very difficult for me to vote yes on a nominee I thought would overturn Roe vs. Wade," she said.

6. My sentiments exactly. Why can't she come right out and say
"I will never vote for someone who might overthrow Roe vs Wade". Then I would have more respect for her. I want to see Boxer to be the one to question him on this. Boxer is much tougher, although I have no doubt Boxer will have her gloves on.

3. Dianne Feinstein is not an attorney, unfortunately . . . and thus
.
Dianne Feinstein is not an attorney, unfortunately . . . and thus must rely upon her staff to advise her in the esoteric legal queries that should be put to Judge Roberts. However, it's damn hard for a non-lawyer to respond immediately and articulately when necessary in order to nail down Roberts. Thus, Feinstein may fail at any deep and probing query of Roberts. And, she's the sole female on the Senate Judiciary Cmte!!?? How stupid can it get?

5. geeesh....maybe she'll do his nails while they have
their lil chat.

CA, you got to do something about this so-called 'Democrat Senator'. Does Feinstein reign over some upper class 'war profiteering' democratic constituency? Really, I can't figure it out, enlighten me.

At least, could ya get off your butts and elect a 'bonifide' Dem for Senator?

I would really appreciate that!

7. DiFi will wimp out
I imagine her blistering examination of Roberts to be something like the following:

DiFi: Your honorable Judge Roberts, do you believe that Roe vs. Wade is settled law?

Roberts: I cannot answer that question because that issue may come before me as a supreme court justice.

DiFi: Could you envision any case in which you would vote to overturn Roe vs. Wade?

Roberts: I cannot answer that question because that issue may come before me as a supreme court justice.

DiFi: I would like to thanks Judge Roberts for his candid, forthright answers and will surely support his confirmation to the supreme court.

8. Feinstein to question Roberts on abortion, congressional power
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose vote on Supreme Court nominee John Roberts could guide other Democrats, said she will scrutinize his views on abortion and congressional authority to set social policy.

Feinstein said Monday that the impending debate over Roberts' nomination was a "big, big deal."

"I don't think in the last couple of decades there has been a Supreme Court appointment that could more tip the balance of the court," Feinstein said in a speech to several hundred Silicon Valley business executives. "That's how mega this vote is."

President Bush nominated Roberts, a federal appeals court judge, in July to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Senate Judiciary Committee hearings are set to begin shortly after Labor Day.
