Bush Compares War on Terror to World Wars
Don't know if anyone got to this yet...

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050823/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush

1 hour, 51 minutes ago

SALT LAKE CITY - President Bush compared the fight against terrorism to both world wars and other great conflicts of the 20th century as he tried to reassure an increasingly skeptical public on Monday to support U.S. military involvement in
Iraq.

With the anti-war movement finding new momentum behind grieving mother Cindy Sheehan, Bush acknowledged the fighting in Iraq is difficult and dangerous. But he told the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention the fight is necessary to keep terrorists out of the United States.

As he did in last year's election campaign and more recently as war opposition has risen, Bush reminded his listeners of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 — reciting the date five times in a 30-minute speech.

"We're not yet safe," Bush said. "Terrorists in foreign lands still hope to attack our country. They still hope to kill our citizens. The lesson of Sept. 11, 2001, is that we must confront threats before they fully materialize."

2. Didn't George Allen (R-VA) compare Iraq to Normandy...
over the weekend? (Had company and am a bit behind in the news...) So, we're off of "freedom ain't free" and on to comparing Iraq to world wars. I thought they didn't launch new products/ideas in August.

7. Desperately seeking validity.
Having no validity itself, they keep trying to connect it with other, respected events. Remember How they tried Bush=Churchill? Laughable comparison.

This one isn't much better.

10. Everyone wants to be draped
with the mantle of Churchill and FDR and McArthur, and Monty and Patton and Eisenhower.....

Waaaaay too many old movies watched on a Saturday afternoon that romanticized what was actually a very dark era for humanity.

Hollywood glamorizing made it all sound like just dashing fun, wot?

I think you hit on something when you said he really needs to see a shrink. Honestly, I believe that he has slipped into a completely delusional psychotic break of some kind. Seriously, his mental state needs to be questioned, because he is making less and less sense as time passes.

23. Is this the very definition of irony?
"President Bush compared the fight against terrorism to both world wars and other great conflicts of the 20th century as he tried to reassure an increasingly skeptical public on Monday to support U.S. military involvement in
Iraq."

So the President is reassuring us by telling us we are facing a situation as bad as 2 World Wars that saw the deaths of millions of people.

Is that the definition of irony?

Or

Is it just foreshadowing?

Bush salutes sacrifices of 2,000 troops
'We will finish the task that they gave their lives for,' he tells VFW

By ELISABETH BUMILLER
New York Times

SALT LAKE CITY - President Bush hailed the sacrifice of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan on Monday and then vowed, in a rare reference to the number of American deaths in each country, that the nation owed it to the more than 2,000 Americans killed in the two wars not to end their missions prematurely.

"Each of these men and women left grieving families and loved ones back home," Bush said here at the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. "Each of these heroes left a legacy that will allow generations of their fellow Americans to enjoy the blessings of liberty."

Then he added, in a clear signal that he would not bow to growing pressure to withdraw troops immediately from Iraq: "We owe them something. We will finish the task that they gave their lives for."

Bush made his speech at his first public appearance in nine days, interrupting a monthlong vacation at his Crawford ranch. In recent weeks, political pressures have intensified over his Iraq policy as the sentiment has grown among Democrats and some Republicans that the war has become reminiscent of Vietnam.

30. There's a term in accounting... "sunk costs"
It refers to costs already made and not recoverable. Sunk costs should never influence decisions about a future course of action.

Bush actually mentioned the number of dead soldiers in his speech.
I think he just wanted the public to know that he knew the numbers.
