New Mexico governor wants Mexican village razed

Tue Aug 23, 2005 8:24 PM ET

SANTA FE, New Mexico (Reuters) - New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson will seek the bulldozing of a Mexican village to improve border security at a meeting with the governor of the Mexican state of Chihuahua this week, a Richardson spokesman said on Tuesday.

Las Chepas is said to be a staging area for immigrants to enter the United States illegally and for other criminal activities, spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said.

An agreement by Mexican officials to raze the hamlet would be "an important step forward for the Mexican government, showing their commitment to work with us," Richardson said in an interview published on Tuesday in the Las Cruces Sun-News in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

OMG

Watch out British Columbia!

If'n that's what they wanna do for a few immigrants

2. Some "claim" he is
Couldn't prove it by me though.
Problem is...I highly doubt Mexico will relocate those individuals that live in poverty in the village he wants razed.
They will just be homeless. I guess that's okay to him.

3. You talk to any of these people living near the border

Folks coming across the border are causing HUGE problems for them. Crime, garbage, just general annoyance. I don't like to see anyone lose their homes, but if people want to come here they should come here legally. Big business wants a cheap source of labor to protect against unionization. These guys are coming here and undercutting the wages for the working man. Protecting working americans is a totally democratic issue, or used to be when we used to win elections anyway.

5. I lived on the border
5 miles from Nuevo Progreso.
I went back and forth quite frequently--at least twice a week.
When you crossed the border, there were POOR people...dirt poor.
People that lived in homes you nor I would consider living in, but it was a roof over their heads and kept them out of the weather and it was ALL THEY HAD!
So the solution now is to raze these homes in this particular town...a show of "good faith" by Mexico...well I ask you...what happens to the people that live in these homes? Does Mexico care? Does the US care?
Do you care?
I do. We have NO RIGHT to ask another country to remove someone's home because it "makes us feel safer".

9. as a Union man I agree
BUT, I draw the line at the border. Is Bill going to send some house trailers over to help relocate the dispossesed?. I don't see the Mex gov't doing it. Try guarding the border.

6. Take It From Someone Who Lives In Albuquerque
Bill Richardson is indeed a Democrat..... and he is Hispanic

He is a good guy, and New Mexico is being swamped. We have "agreements" where the local police will not ask if anyone is illegal... so no one will be afraid to ask for help if they need it.... he wants drivers lic. for illegals.... women come here to have babies, not to mention that I personally know a family that came up from Mexico so their Grandmother could have treatments for cancer, and it was done for free here in town at the teaching hospital.

So New Mexico is hardly the State from Hell for illegal immigrants.....

....and this problem is "far from a handful of (illegal) immigrants"......

As I'm sure everyone knows........

New Mexico is infact a "Minority Majority (Hispanic) State"........

7. Let's not ever forget that Bill Richardson
worked feverishly to wipe the voting machines EVEN WHEN the results were being questioned.
I will work just as feverishly AGAINST him in any national campaign he partakes.

8. I'm from AZ and it's a big problem. Crime, extortion (mostly of the
illegal immigrants)

Being concerned about our porous borders and the estimated 11 million illegal residents isn't anti progressive, bigoted or racist. It's reality.

just saying

12. Symptoms and problems
It is often difficult to distinguish between the two.

Used to live near Naco border crossing. The US allows Mexican goods to flow freely across the border but not the people? Would the Mexican humans come across if they were not pushed out by US transnationals who wanted the raw materials from the land/home of these soon to be labelled "illegals".

We in the wealthy West would do well to look in the mirror therein we would find the problem.

10. What has Bill Richardson the "Hispanic" done to hold businesses
accountable??? Otherwise he's just blowin smoke up the biggots asses!!! Try to nail a big business like Denny's...the employer of the Mexican immigrant who totaled my car (no licsence, his fault) & forced me to drop out of school for 2 years.

If your "Hispanic Democrat" Mr Richardson in New Mexico doesn't go after the big fish...he's just trying to get votes.

11. What about really serious fines for those who hire undocumented labot?
A major chunk of the cash collected could be donated for improvements in the villages of origin.
