Congresman likens divorce to gay nuptials
http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/fortwayne/news/local/12472633.htm

EVANSVILLE – U.S. Rep. John Hostettler told a gathering of clergy that divorce is as dangerous to society as gay marriage and that churches are essential to strengthening families.

“The picture of marriage is the picture of Christian salvation,” Hostettler, R-Ind., said Tuesday. “Any diminishing of that notion – whether homosexual marriage or any other degradation of marriage – is something we must fight in public policy.”

9. yes, let's do link the two.
And let's make sure that America knows about how Republicans want to keep people in crappy marriages; it's all part of their cleansing jihad.

Let's see how that goes over in the heartland, where divorce is more likely to happen than in Blue America.

So must Hindus and Muslims and Buddists and every other person of non- Christian followings. For that matter, this Christian desperately wants absolutely NOTHING to do with their "brand" of Christianity.

Hey pal, if gay marriage and divorce are equals, push baby push for a constituional amendment to ban divorce. I will gladly sign that petition.

I will be completely honest and say that of all the couples I have personally known, the ones that have divorced MOST are Republicans. The ones that have stayed together, through thick and through thin, are Dems.

For the record, my wife (a progressive Dem) and I have been together for nearly 20 years. That is the equivalent of two eternities in Republican years.

16. The Holy Joe Right Has Wanted To Restrict Divorce For Years
The self-righteous right has wanted to restrict divorce for years now. I remember coming across a Cal Thomas riff on the subject while channel surfing during a cross-country drive nearly ten years ago. Of course the place-sitters and presstitutes of the corporate media weren't paying the slightest bit of attention.

I can't say that I'm fond of the notion of divorce myself--but I strongly oppose the Polyester Pharisees' efforts to force everyone to take the Polyester Pharisees' so-called "covenant marriage."

49. "Polyester Pharisees",
lol! That's a perfect way to describe these idiots. I absolutely cannot stand hypocrisy, and for repukes to be ranting against divorce has to be the ultimate hypocrisy, considering how many of them are on their second or third wives ('ol Newtie Gingrich, anyone)?

Speaking of Newt-how is it moral to serve your first wife divorce papers while she's in the hospital for cancer surgery, then marry the mistress you left said first wife for, then leave your second wife to marry your much-younger legislative assistant?

51. Feel Free To Use The Phrase, And Also Remember That...
Please feel free to use the phrase yourself, since it's out in the open. Also, I recall hearing somewhere that the Old Testament Jews were forbidden to wear cloth woven of two different materials. So anyone wearing, say, a 60% cotton, 40% polyester shirt would be in violation of OT law.

Also, someone else on this thread pointed out that a lot of the Red States with the highest percentages of evangelicals in their populations are also the ones with the highest divorce rates.

60. Conservatives actually have higher
divorce rates than liberals or non-conservatives; that goes for all conservatives and not just evangelical ones. That fits with the pattern I've seen among people I know; most libs I know have been married for decades, while most conservatives I know or know of have been divorced at least once.

wtf "“The picture of marriage is the picture of Christian salvation” means. Seriously, I have no idea as to what that sentence means. It is gibberish. Do these guys get their linguistic inspiration from Firesign Theatre ( no insult intended to Firesign theatre)? Seriously, try reading that sentence with just about any word thrown in for "picture:" car battery, avocado, razor wire. They all fit and they all make just as little sense. Trying to read this drivel is like trying to swim through a pool of molasses.

Perhaps this schmuck from Indiana isn't aware that - the state w/the LOWEST DIVORCE RATE in the country (Massachusetts) - is the only state which allows same-sex couples to wed!

Maybe Hostetler should focus on 'Red State' divorce rates. Afterall, they are the highest in the Nation.

Gun found in congressman's carry-on bag
Lawmaker detained, but not arrested at airport

CNN Washington Bureau
Tuesday, April 20, 2004 Posted: 8:02 PM EDT (0002 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. congressman was briefly detained at a Kentucky airport Tuesday after authorities found a loaded gun in his bag at a screening checkpoint, authorities said.

Rep. John Hostettler, R-Indiana, "completely forgot" he had the gun in his bag as he prepared to take a US Airways flight to Washington for the first day of work after a two-week recess, a spokesman for the congressman said.

A Homeland Security Department official said Hostettler had a loaded 9 mm Glock pistol in his bag at Louisville International Airport.

But their logo is cute:

Still, it wasn't very Patriotic of him to carry a concealed loaded French handgun onto a passenger plane heading for Washington DC. Even if he thinks their logo is cute...

Divorce is a way of life..it could happen to anybody and it has nothing to do with Gay Marriages..One is about Love and the other is about the death of a marriage.

he's just opened a new argument for legalizing and government recognition of gay marriage.

if divorce is the same as homosexual marriage, and divorce is legal, then by using that exact logic then homosexual marriage (and governmental recognition) should also be legal.

Jesus actually spoke about divorce (not a good thing). Never once is he said to have mentioned homosexuality, and certainly not gay marriage.

So all those thrice-married hypocrites on the radical right might want to take a closer look at themselves before deciding that Bruce and Fred getting married will cause the end of the world.
