Bush supporters and war protestors plan debate — (08/25/2005)

Supporters of President Bush and war protestors have agreed to a face-off.
More Bush supporters are expected to be in Crawford this weekend, just in time for a debate between the opposing camps.

During a press conference earlier today, Cindy Sheehan agreed to debate supporters of President Bush.

...

Sheehan agreed to the debate under one condition, she does not want the media to attend and she has not given a reason as to why yet.

Gary Qualls says he will still debate Sheehan even if the media is not there.

3. Absolutely not !!
It will not only weaken what she has done thus far, it will turn this 'tipping point' upside and only be good for Bush.

The media will critique the shit out of it and turn it into a freak show.

6. My point exactly.
I wish we had a rhetorical question 'smiley' like we have the 'sarcasm' one.

The last thing anyone needs is more ridiculous media bias (especially Faux). If they truly want answers she'll give them some so that they can understand just why she want answers from the chimp.

21. I wouldn't mind Al sharpton being the moderator
Really, I would trust him to do a great job and to keep the debate on track. Only, I guess it might be the first time, ever, we would have to establish a time limit for the moderator.

11. I agree. This is a horrible idea...
Cindy has the nation's attention. What would be served by Cindy sharing the stage with these fascists? Why elevate them to her level? This isn't a clash of morally equivalent viewpoints; it's more like Rosa Parks debating the Ku Klux Klan. It would be a terrible mistake.

39. In addition what is there to debate?
There is no debate here--is Qualls going to pull proof of weapons of mass destruction or a compromising video of a Saddam/ Bin laden love child out of his ass?

If not then what is there to debate?

No connection between AQ and Iraq, no weapons of mass destruction.

Good idea... and with the media...

If she wins... then awesome.

If she loses, then...

Picture some fat, obnoxious, cruel-looking warmonger waiving his finger at a crying mom who is being unfairly attacked with nonsequitorvone-liners on the cover of six-dozen newspapers.

Who is this nut that wants to debate her and why should she? What is there to gain out of it?

Another Bush operative trying to undermine her. No media for the debate?

34. Yes, I don't know Cindy but it seems she speaks from the heart, while
this Quall guy seems to spout Rush talking points while in the media lime-light.

Someone posted a picture of Cindy giving this guy a hug. They have the lose of a son in common. A private heart-to-heart may not change anyone's mind but could lead to a civil agreement to disagree - mutual respect for each other's viewpoints. It is from that basis that an honest dialog can begin and progress can be made.

I know - wishful thinking.

17. I don't think she should meet with them at all, but if she does, I agree
with the 'no media'. Because the whole purpose of the 'prowar' folks is a fabrication of Rovian PR factory and needs media oxygen to fulfill its purpose. Her point I guess is if we debate it will be an honest exchange of ideas and not to fulfill some media circus.

Of course the whole purpose of the wingnut counterprotest is to create a supposedly RW leaning media circus.

If the media is not allowed to attend, they will contend that Cindy is a coward or a loon. She should allow the media to attend and stick to her message -- she would kick ass.

20. Please tell Cindy this is an awful idea
Both of these people lost children in the conflict. They have a difference of opinion on how to honor their children's lives. Their can no winner or loser here. Leave it lie and let them both be.

Now if people want to debate who are in the military, vets or vets families that's fine. I just don't think we need to see people so wounded debating. This is not a college course, that pain is for keeps.

29. I think SHE DID ABSOLUTELY THE RIGHT THING!!!!!!!
Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 05:47 AM by jsamuel
He has lost a loved one, she has lost a loved one. If they need to debate PRIVATELY in order to help each other grieve, then that is wonderful. The media should not attend this as it is between two people who are in a similar situation and could be disastrous for the nation if they saw this much heartbreak coming at each other in a debate on national TV. And by that, I mean that it would probably be bad for Cindy because it would make her look like an attention grabber (even if she wins) and it would give Qualls more reason to shout and less reason to listen.

She just naturally seems to be able to do the right thing... I find it very strange... She kind of knows what to do all the time... And she isn't a polition... Maybe that is why...
