Haggard fears for evangelicals in Venezuela after Robertson’s comments
http://www.summitdaily.com/article/20050825/NEWS/50825001

COLORADO SPRINGS — Fearing that Pat Robertson’s calls to assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez could increase the danger for evangelical missionaries in that country, the Rev. Ted Haggard on Wednesday said he is trying to set up a meeting with Chavez.

In several appearances on national television this week, Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, tried to distance the evangelical movement from Robertson’s comments on his show that the U.S. assassinate Chavez to avoid an expensive war in the region. Robertson has since apologized for his comments.

Haggard said he is flying to Mexico City Thursday to meet with a friend of Chavez , who apparently saw Haggard during one of his appearances. He is hoping to arrange a meeting with Chavez.

“Based on the discussion there, we’ll determine whether a meeting is appropriate or not,” Haggard said.

a pardon for Chavez.

3. Well, Chavez can take a number and get in line
I'm sure there are many people in countries that Robertson has exploited with the likes of Charles Taylor, who would love to see Pat meet his maker sooner rather than later.

6. No, that would just make a martyr of him.
They would make a shrine where his body "miraculously" doesn't decompose, and people would visit it for "healing."

Better that he be blamed for having the evangelical missionaries in Venezuala "taken out." And by that, I could mean arrested.

5. I think Pat Robertson does speak for a lot of evangelicals
He and many evangelicals supported Bush. Bush recognized the man who replaced Chavez after a coup immediately so whatever part Bush played in the coup itself, it is clear that Bush supported its result. Unfortunately for Bush the coup was not successful.

So unless evangelicals make a break with Bush, I think the people of Venezuela should be suspicious of them.

7. I Have NO Sympathy For Evangelicals
Or any other pushy, door-to-door religion salesman. The Unitarian-Universalists make it a point NOT to proselytize; if you want a decent religion, you have to look for us and find us yourself.

13. I actually like talking about the Bible and religion with evangelicals
You can have really good conversations about religion if you know the Bible as well as they do.

Most evangelicals are people who truly believe that you are going to hell if you are not "saved". They think that it is their responsibility to their fellow man to share the message of redemption through Jesus with them. Some also take very seriously the feeding the poor, clothing the naked and visiting the imprisoned part of Jesus' teachings, too. You can have good conversations that lead to better understandings, but you have to have respect. I know that's harder to do if you are gay, as there is really no getting around their condemnation, and the personal nature of it.

I have had discussions with evangelicals about homosexuality. They usually quote from Leviticus or Deutoronomy about how it is an abomination before the Lord. I have two responses:

1. Then let the Lord deal with it.
or
2. Doesn't that come from the same part of the Bible that also tells us to stone urban rape victims who don't scream? Why don't we do that anymore? Aren't we also supposed to sacrifice animals to God? Why don't we do that anymore? You'd be surprised how many self-proclaimed born again christians have not read that much of their Bible and can't argue back.

Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 08:32 AM by chimpsrsmarter
"Part of his show is sermon and the other part is when he's a political pundit" and now he's concerned? Maybe Jesus spoke onto him while he was sleeping last night and told him Pat
was to be smited soon.

18. Chavez is not Robertson.
Robertson is the one advocating violence. How come Haggard isn't concerned for Chavez's well being?
