Republicans pitch counter to Granholm tax cut plan

By Matt Whetstone, Cadillac News

LANSING - Michigan House Republicans have pitched a plan to cut $1.1 billion in business taxes over the next five years at a price tag of $933 million.

The proposal, an alternative to one proposed by Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, could be voted on next week.

The concern for local manufacturers is that Granholm will veto the plan as she has continuously stated that any business tax cuts in Michigan must be revenue neutral.

"The Republican proposal is going to cause a lot of debate, argument and perhaps will be vetoed by the governor," said Bruce Schafer, vice president of manufacturing at Rexair in Cadillac. "There's frustration in the sense that we have a lot of finger pointing between the two political parties. The Republicans have been in charge of the House and the Senate for a lot of years and somehow they're trying to blame the economic situation on Granholm."

1. 36 tax cuts under Engler

And no surge in new business; the revenue hasn't been replaced. But it's Granholm's fault.

That man sold Michigan down the river and then moved to Virginia when he was term-limited out. How I loathe him.

2. Unfortunate thing about state taxes
They have to compete against each other for business by giving tax breaks. I wish the states could band together and stop the throat-cutting. It serves no one's purpose except the corporations. I've always thought if companies thought more about how to make their business better instead of how to squeeze a few pennies out of states in tax breaks, they would be money ahead. but maybe that's naive.
