Bush urges residents to flee hurricane

August 27, 2005

CRAWFORD, Texas --The White House on Saturday asked residents along Louisiana's southeastern coast to heed authorities' advice to evacuate as Hurricane Katrina headed for landfall.

President Bush, vacationing at his ranch, was being regularly updated about the storm, which is expected to hit land early Monday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said. Officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency continue to coordinate with state authorities in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, and have prepositioned supplies in areas expected to be affected, he said.

Authorities told residents of low-lying coastal communities to head for higher ground. The storm was expected to strengthen as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico and could become a Category 4 hurricane with wind of at least 131 mph.

"We urge residents in the areas that could be impacted to follow the recommendations of local authorities," McClellan said.....

weed-n-chief might actually save lifes. How odd for him, doesn't his advice and warnings and fear usually result in NEEDLESS DEATHS AND INJURIES.

11. Now wouldn't it be something -
if there was a major disaster in N. Orleans. There's massive flooding. People are devastated: the loss is indescribable.

Horrible. Where is the National Guard? In Iraq, all of them. Can they bring some of them home? Doubtful. Are there any other people who can help out? Like who?

Bush had better hope to GOD the city is spared, or he will be Dead Meat.

14. I'll bet there are still guard in Florida
Of course there is probably a tropical depression right behind Katrina, so he'd be damned if he does damned if he doesn't.

God forbid should he not cover the Jebster's ass for all occasions.

BTW is it even Hurrican season yet? I thought it started in September?

15. Yes, I wonder how many.
I'll see if I can dredge up some figures. It would be interesting to find out.

Looting is also a big problem after huge storms. Although it might not be such a big problem if N. Orleans is under water.

18. How can we be in a *war on terra*
And yet this pile of crap has left us without the most basic protection, or amenities?

Perhaps amenities isn't the right term--but I would think the US public should at least be able to depend on typical emergency services in the event of a natural disastor.

Obviously NOT under herr bush!

22. They'll just round up a bunch of active and reserve support types
Go to any base, find a passle of desk jockeys, and put them on work detail. Make them do just their essential work, change into their working/utility uniforms, and get them out there with FEMA guidance so they have some supervision.

That is basically how they get the huge military turnout at inaugurals. They round up the office workers, make some of them do organizing, and others are escorts, marchers, slobs who stand on the curb every ten feet or so....they are not volunteers for this, they are "volunteered." Every branch has a quota that they have to cough up to the Military Inaugural Committee, which is usually chaired by the poor junior flag bastard over at the Navy Yard. And at the office level, it is usually the new arrivals or the slackers who get stuck with that type of duty...

Managing the effects of a hurricane seems preferable to managing the effects of his foreign policy.

25. The evacuation situation is bad, I think.
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 06:22 AM by Usrename
I don't have any backup for this, but Sen. Landrieu (LA)has been trying for years to get funding for evacuation routes. I think it may be in the highway bill that just passed. I don't think they can get out. She doesn't strike me as someone who would make that up.

from Shreveport Times,May 11, 2005 By John Hill

"In Washington, U.S. Sens. Mary Landrieu and David Vitter separately announced the U.S. Senate had adopted an amendment to the bill that gives priority in the "national corridors" pot of money for emergency evacuation routes. That, they said, gives I-49 another shot at the federal money."
