Biden, closer to running, blasts Bush

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- Borrowing a phrase from former Secretary of State Colin Powell, U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., offered his take Sunday on fixing the "broken pottery" in Iraq.

In an appearance on ABC`s "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" -- during which Biden said he was "closer" to declaring his candidacy for president -- he again called for the firing of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld as the first step in fixing the "pottery." Biden sharply criticized President Bush for not considering alternative plans in Iraq.

Addressing the president directly, Biden said: "The way to fix it is, first, get rid of Rumsfeld, so that the rest of the world will have some confidence and be willing to join us in any way politically or economically. Secondly, lay out specific terms, as to how many Iraqis you have train, when you are training them ... and when you expect to be able to draw down American forces."

24. It's hardly even an attack.
Remind me, has Biden said word one about the DSM? About the proven fact that it was a whole team of liars - not just Rumsfeld - that lied us into war?

10. I suspect Biden is playing a political game with the Repubs.
He announces he's closer to running for President, then attacks Bush.

Then, Repubs will chortle "oh, he's just saying that because he's running for President".

Then, as that hubbub starts to wind down, then other Democrats who aren't necesssarily running for President bring out their cannons and begin attacking the White House at will.

Biden will have given them a precedent, that is, a cover.

17. Fire Rummy, hire Wesley
Fire Rummy, hire Wesley

I know it is *very* unpopular to try and discuss military strategy at DU but, I think we need to have a reality check here. Is Iraq really unwinnable or is it just that Rummy has't tried yet? I honestly don't think they want to do anything in Iraq other than use it for politcal mileage and thereby divide the true anti-Bush into two camps (pro-military and anti-war). Yes, I understand that you can support the military and be anti-war. Thats kinda where I would put myself. But if your not truely anti-military, then why refuse to discusss military options, they do exist and its our loved ones that are being ground up in this nightmare.

I think we can actually acomlish something positive (not an immediate withdrawl, but something more positive than what is happening at this moment) by supporting Sen. Biden's effort to fire this bastard Rummy. Evidence Rummy's superior (sarcastic) military strategy so far. There are so many insane examples but I just would like you to consider (from a millitary and strategic perspective) these two events that have occured during the reconstruction in Iraq:

1. Car bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad. Left totally undefended. Bush speaks two days later and pretty much declares a victory because now the world will see what an evil enemy we face.

I'm just guessing here, but I think Wesley, who is a real general (read PHD in winning armed conflicts), would have recognized UN headquarters as a high priority target for the enemy. This is also a guess, but I don't think the enemy guys behind the successful bombing (the UN immediately withdrew from Baghdad) saw it as a terrible defeat for their side.

2. About two weeks later, same thing with the International Red Cross also left completely undefended. Bush response, I don't remember being able to discern any difference. The guy lacks range in his speeches.

I'm pretty sure ol Wes would have caught this one, even if he missed the first one. This is not, can't be, I refuse to be persuaded that this is incompetance. Does anyone really think that this is the best military strategy that our Armed Forces can come up with? Of course not. We have Generals that do this stuff really well, they are the best in the world, far better trained than me (never in the military) and I can see how stupid this entire fiasco has been handled.

It must be intentional blundering and possibly treason.

They (the current White House) have got nothing without this war.

Its tearing the country and (more importantly when it comes to winning elections) our party apart. We must not let them do this.

I am trying to build a concensus. Ignore everthing else in this post and please, please answer just this:

Does anyone believe Rummy is doing a wonderful job and we should "stay the course"?

Or, should we immediatly support Sen. Biden's position on the war and make a serious effort to replace him? (If successful we Democrats do have enough senators to ensure that any new nomination, other than Wesley Clark, can be blocked in the Senate.)

19. Yes to getting rid of Rumsfeld
But that isn't enough to get help from the rest of the world.

Bush, Cheney, and Rice will all have to go for that to happen.

And I don't think Biden will be the right person to replace them.

20. I agree they have to go, but why "do nothing" until that happens
Their day will come, but this is something we can help do now. We are not powerful enough (politically) to bring the troops home now. If we were, the troops would be returning as we speak. I think this effort could increase our (political) ability to reach that day *much* sooner. In any case, it isn't neccessarily counterproductive to our goals (take back the white house).

23. Yeah, just getting rid of ONE liar will fix the problem. Sure.
Biden, I hope someone close to you is reading this: YOU'RE A FUCKING IDIOT WHO WILL NEVER GET MY VOTE.

One wonders if Biden ever remembers - or even acknowledges the fact - that we were LIED INTO AN ILLEGAL FUCKING WAR. Why on EARTH would the rest of the world trust the REST of the liars left after ditching Rumsfeld?

26. He is a prime example of why we'll never see a sane President again
Let's say he runs.

No Republicans vote for him obviously.
Many Democrats are willing to vote NOT-Republican.
Many others are not willing to vote for an ass, just to vote Non-Rep.

Therefore the Republican gets 50% of the votes. Biden (or insert other corporatist assface here) gets 30% of the vote, and 20% go all over the map, or stay home, inflating the other numbers.

I'm thinking of seceding.
