STATEMENT BY THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA IN THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE KATRINA

By GOC
Aug 30, 2005, 21:24

The Government of Canada today issued the following statement in support of those who have endured the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in the United States:

"On behalf of all Canadians, I wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones as a result of Hurricane Katrina, as well as our sympathies to those who have suffered great losses and personal hardship," said Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan. "During this difficult time, we are offering our support to our friends and neighbours."

The Deputy Prime Minister added that she has contacted U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and advised him that Canada stands ready to provide assistance if needed. In addition, the Minister of Health, Ujjal Dosanjh, has directed the Public Health Agency of Canada to contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and offer any assistance that may be helpful, such as emergency medical supplies contained in the National Emergency Stockpile System

Also has this info at the bottom:

"Canadians with good reason to believe that Canadian friends or relatives are in the affected areas may contact Foreign Affairs Canada's Emergency Operations Centre at
1-800-267-6788, or in Ottawa at (613) 944-6788."

Glaringly
"The Deputy Prime Minister added that she has contacted U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and advised him that Canada stands ready to provide assistance if needed."

Everytime I have seen one of those, they had contacted the President or Leader of that country. Amazingly ours wasn't available.

Let them eat cake!

Absolutely astonishing that the President of another country can offer his condolences

That was the Deputy Prime Minister. It's a purely informal position -- just one minister like the rest in the cabinet (all members of cabinet being elected members of Parliament like the Prime Minister) whom the PM picks to handle stuff when he's away. Hmm, actually, Deputy Prime Minister's a little more functional than Vice President, when you think about it.

And ... the Deputy Prime Minister's a she at the moment. One more thing y'all can be jealous about.

;)

I signed up to billet stranded US air travellers back in 2001 -- turned out that where I am was somewhere they weren't diverting them to, but of course people where the travellers ended up did take them all in. And Canada took in a big batch of people from Kosovo for temporary refuge a few years ago --

http://www.cds.forces.ca/pubs/anrpt/anxadom_e.asp

Operation PARASOL: In a highly successful joint humanitarian operation with Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Red Cross, the Canadian Forces provided temporary accommodations to approximately 5,000 Kosovar refugees between April and August 1999. The Kosovar refugees were received at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Greenwood and Trenton. Following a brief medical examination, they were then accommodated at CF facilities at Aldershot, Borden, Gagetown, Greenwood, Halifax, Kingston and Trenton.
Maybe that's something we should think about doing again -- except you people would probably never go home!

But seriously. I wish your policymakers would accept some of the expertise that's on offer from the world. It's far more appropriate for this kind of assistance to be offered, and provided, on a country-to-country basis than by individuals sending off dollars to charities (which I don't expect Bush will spurn because this is all an internal matter). One country has a collective disaster, it has to deal with that disaster collectively, and the other countries help out collectively; that's how it should be, for a lot of good reasons.

But we all know that they have too many reasons of their own not to accept it for it ever to happen.

32. Canadian Bacon
I still remember a great scene from the movie Canadian Bacon, which starred John Candy, Dan Akyroyd and others. There was a group of Canadian citizens. Then a group of Americans pushed their way through the Canadians, roughly throwing them to the ground. As they were being tossed aside, the Canadians kept politely saying "Oh, please excuse me. Was I in your way? Oh, so sorry. Please pardon me."

47. Many American Electricians and Engineers helped us a lot in 98
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 08:20 AM by Amonester
I wish I could be more helpful than I am for our dear good American people (especially the anti-pnac-bush-permanent-stupid-war-for-domination on the world AND on them) through paying my ("huge") share of taxes. If paying them can help our neighbors in this terrible tragedy, I sure have no objections at all to even pay MORE and MORE TAXES.

Human beings are more important than any f*****g money!

Also, many THANKS again to ALL who helped us then:

Ice storm 1998 Eastern Canada
http://www.hprcc.unl.edu/nebraska/icecase.html

Special Adjournment Debate (Ice Storm) in the House of Commons
http://www.pco-bcp.gc.ca/default.asp?Language=E&Page=pmarchive&Sub=Speeches&Doc=speeches19980204721_e.htm

A storm beyond compare (Mainers)
http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/specialrpts/ice/over.htm

Now, it sure wouldn't hurt if the Bushkeviks would start complying to the three soft-wood lumber decisions issued in our favor since that unjust tax penalty they imposed from day 1 of their mad-administration.

Merci beaucoup to ALL who helped us in those "freezing" and tragic times again.
