Cheney to hold St. Louis fundraiser for Talent

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney will host a major fundraiser for Sen. Jim Talent in September, as the Missouri Republican gears up for a challenge from Democratic State Auditor Claire McCaskill.

Talent spokesman Rich Chrismer confirmed Wednesday that Cheney would host the event in St. Louis on Sept. 19, less than three weeks after McCaskill launched her bid to unseat the first term senator.

Chrismer declined to state how much the event would raise. Talent already holds a sizable advantage over McCaskill with about $3.4 million in his war chest. That includes more than $1 million from a June event that President Bush attended in St. Louis.

"We expect the event with the vice president to be very successful," Chrismer said.

13. Me too!
He has been invisible all week. You'd think the Vice President of the United States would have some involvement in the biggest disaster to hit the country in modern times.

4. McCaskill is an Emily's List candidate.
McCaskill to challenge Talent in Missouri Senate race

Missouri Auditor Claire McCaskill is stepping up to the plate to challenge right-wing GOP Sen. Jim Talent in 2006.

Talent defeated EMILY’s List candidate Jean Carnahan in the 2002 election that determined who would serve the remainder of the seat won by Carnahan’s late husband, Mel Carnahan, in 2000.

The enormously popular McCaskill ran a strong race for governor in 2004, defeating Democratic incumbent Bob Holden in the primary and narrowly losing to Republican Matt Blunt in the general. Blunt, the son of Cong. Roy Blunt, is earning extremely low approval ratings from voters in this swing state.

McCaskill made an official announcement Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Best of luck to her!

9. Talent might be worrying Bush'll hold him back!
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 05:11 PM by Judi Lynn
He couldn't have thrown himself on the Bush powerwagon hard enough when he ran the first time, but now he may have reservations, according to the last two paragraphs:
Talent is likely to keep his fundraising on pace with help from heavy hitters such as Bush and Cheney. But Jones said a major question Talent faces is how much he wants Bush to campaign for him around the state given the president's low approval ratings.

"Once we get closer to the election itself, if president Bush continues to have popularity problems, Talent will have to decide exactly how close or distant he wants to tie his campaign to the administration," Jones said.
