Frustrations voiced on tube (Timing of Bush photo-op questioned)

NEW YORK -- Professional distance gave way to grief and rage among TV reporters and commentators as they quizzed officials on why it took five days to get aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

As President Bush toured the devastation Friday, news organizations got pictures of the first significant military convoy entering the city, nearly four days after it was submerged by floodwaters.

"You don't suppose that the photo ops and the military convoys arriving at the same time were a coincidence, do you, Wolf?" said CNN commentator Jack Cafferty to anchor Wolf Blitzer during CNN's "Situation Room."

I wonder if this will finally be a turning point for the MSM, and if they will finally began to wake up, cast of the chains fo their right-wing masters, and begin fulfilling their intended Constitutional role.

One can only hope.

8. Citizen volunteers were told to wait for Bush
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 01:09 AM by melissinha
A caller to the Majority Report that had brought a boat to assist in rescue efforts was instructed to wait OVERNIGHT til Bush would arrive before mobilizing. I don't think its heresay, cause they guy said he was literally there.

9. Cafferty's daughter is a Senior at Tulane..........
same as mine. We've talked a few times about things Tulane, previous evacuations and the total disarray while doing so.
This kinda' hits home for Jack and I'm glad to see he's awakening to the ineptness of the bush cabal and the damage he's done to government programs.
I have to wonder though, if Leigh wasn't a student in that area would Jack be as jumping mad as he is now? I'd like to think so. I know a lot of people here trash him, but he really is a decent guy.

14. I advocate making the arguments personal for just this reason
When it's people you don't know in places you don't know it's easier to take a conservative stand. We all can pretend it isn't what it appears, if we really want to. McCafferty was right and understated. The response to this disaster is an embarassment. If he never utters another word on the subject I will still thank him for that moment of clarity without spin.

Says former NYTimes editor Howell Raines called Bush's feckless cavalier attitude "outrageous".

Tin-eared Bush bombs again.

12. What you are seeing is the beginning of civic journalism.
Journalism, just like any industry, evolves. The role of the journalist in American society has evolved several times during the 20th Century. The impact of the Iraq War and this, a disaster that has dwarfed 9/11 in proportion, has opened the door to the civic journalist.

The civic journalist stands on the side of the citizen. For the last decade or two, journalism has viewed citizens as news consumers, yet these disasters have forced journalists to introspect on their role. I believe we are witnessing the result of that introspection.

Given that they are two-dimensional faces on television, we Americans tend to trivialize journalists. They are not perfect beings. Rightfully, we complain when they get errors wrong, we get angry when they miss or fail to report on an important issues, yet consider that 67 journalists have lost their lives covering Iraq. 67. What does that say to you? Journalists are people. They have families, relatives, and bills to worry about. The average salary for a starting print journalist is, typically, no more than $25,000 a year.

We should applaud what they are doing in New Orleans. We should write letters and encourage them to do more. It's nice to see SOMEONE be human, rather than the garbage in the White House.
