Extremists say Katrina was result of Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza
http://www.tehrantimes.com/Description.asp?Da=9/4/2005&Cat=4&Num=002

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As religious and political leaders offered prayers for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, some Christian fundamentalists suggested the storm was the work of an angry God bent on punishing a sinful nation. snip

Others said the disaster, which may have killed thousands in Louisiana and Mississippi, was revenge for the United States' support of the removal of Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip.

"Whenever this country encourages Israel to give up any part of their rightful God-given land we have suffered the consequences," wrote a discussion-board participant on the Web site of the Christian Broadcasting Network.

A Philadelphia group called Repent America said the hurricane was sent by God to prevent an annual gay-pride festival that was due to take place this weekend. "We must not forget that the citizens of New Orleans tolerated and welcomed the wickedness in their city for so long," said Repent America director Michael Marcavage. "May this act of God cause us all to think about what we tolerate in our city limits." snip

But Franklin Graham, who heads the evangelical charity Samaritan's Purse, said on the Fox News Channel on Thursday night that the mayhem and looting in New Orleans could be traced to a lack of religious instruction.

gawed's intentions! The bible clearly states that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because their inhabitants refused to provide hospitality. It had NOTHING to do with sex, according to that particular myth or whatever.

This is so BS. I was wondering how long it would take them to come up with some idiotic scheme or another.

Oh And. Like the US MADE Israel withdraw? Wasn't that Sharon's plan?

God must be merciful. He allows fundies to spew.

4. It's an angry President punishing blue city of poor people in a red state
Now Halliburton gets to clean everything up, developers get to build anything they want, and all those poor, black people are either displaced or dead.

Let's try and re-locate them all to a swing-state! How about Ohio?

We should be getting those people to re-register to vote or get them absentee ballots right now.

where we could house all these crazy loonatic fundies (of all religions).

And then hopefully a big tidal wave or tropical storm would strike it...
Or better yet, maybe the island would have an active volcano...

You get the idea.

Then again, the tidal wave would probably not be necessary. The fundies would kill eaxh other off in a fit of rage before any natural disaster would strike.

18. Lets not forget....
when Israel came into possession of the West Bank, it was Jordanian territory, not Palestinian and it was literally ceded top Israel because the King of Jordan announced he would NOT try to get back that land.
Israel won the land during the 6 Day war of 1967. They also won the Sinai Peninsula in the same 6 Day war but gave it back to Egypt in exchange for a peace treaty with Anwar Sadat.
Whatever territory Israel holds beyond its original borders, came as the result of wars started by the arab states.
As for Palestinians, they are just Arabs as are all the rest of them. They didn't even call themselves Palestinians until 1967.

26. You can't "win" territory through warfare and comply with the U.N.
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 11:27 AM by wuushew
Either consider it an un-administered section of Jordon or a Palestinian territory awaiting recognition as a sovereign state. Under no circumstances is a notion of a Greater Israel legitimate.

Resolution 242 (1967)
of 22 November 1967

The Security Council,

Expressing its continuing concern with the grave situation in the Middle East,

Emphasizing the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war and the need to work for a just and lasting peace in which every State in the area can live in security,

Emphasizing further that all Member States in their acceptance of the Charter of the United Nations have undertaken a commitment to act in accordance with Article 2 of the Charter,

1. Affirms that the fulfillment of Charter principles requires the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East which should include the application of both the following principles:

(i) Withdrawal of Israel armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict;

(ii) Termination of all claims or states of belligerency and respect for and acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every State in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force;

2. Affirms further the necessity

(a) For guaranteeing freedom of navigation through international waterways in the area;

(b) For achieving a just settlement of the refugee problem;

(c) For guaranteeing the territorial inviolability and political independence of every State in the area, through measures including the establishment of demilitarized zones;

3. Requests the Secretary-General to designate a Special Representative to proceed to the Middle East to establish and maintain contacts with the States concerned in order to promote agreement and assist efforts to achieve a peaceful and accepted settlement in accordance with the provisions and principles in this resolution;

4. Requests the Secretary-General to report to the Security Council on the progress of the efforts of the Special Representative as soon as possible.

Adopted unanimously at the 1382nd meeting.

57. It was not ceded to Israel.
In '48, Jordan refused to recognize the partitioning of the Palestinian Mandate and in a land grab tried to claim all the West Bank for itself, in violation of the UN decision which would have established a Palestinian state there. Such partitions were favored at that time, i.e., N & S Korea, N & S Vietnam, India/Pakistan, etc. It remained in Jordanian hands until '67 when the Israelis took it in the 6 Day War. After their own bloody rebellion by the PLO and Black September, the Jordanians renounced their claim to the West Bank. That didn't make it part of Israel, even though Israel had physical control there. All it did was acknowledge that the UN partition of '48 was valid. Therefore, all Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal and in violation of the original partition, just as was Jordan's occupation of the West Bank.

You are correct that there was only the smallest Palestinian nationalist movement at the time of the partition and the locals did not have any national identity as being Palestinian or Jordanian.

27. Can you elaborate your second
sentence? I don't quite understand your meaning. Do you mean Gaza? Do you have a link for that info? That is something I have not heard. I know that our government sends a lot of money to Israel, and some of that money is probably being used to pay those settlers, but I haven't heard about direct payments to settlers. Direct or indirect, I guess does not make a whole lot of difference.

"Refugees" are not starving because we have no food - they were starving because of the uncaring incompetence of clueless "leaders."

16. Hey, Repent America: they had the parade anyway.
I guess your hateful and murderous god failed. NPR had a story about it this morning. Only 12 people showed up for the parade, but they by god showed up and had their parade anyway.

The parade went on, but many chuches were destroyed. Let that bounce around your vile little fundamentalist head for awhile, Michael Marcavage.

These fundamentalist sob's get no free pass ever again. I'll call them unchristlike, malignant hatemongers every time they are. I'll make fiscal conservatives defend their acquiescence to this sort of crap. I'll make churchgoers either repudiate all this crap or sign on to it. These fundamentalists, from Robertson to Franklin Graham to the entire SBC need to be destroyed, eradicated, dealt with. And I'll blast the **** out of anyone who tries to defend these pigs on grounds of religious freedom. Religious freedom ends where hurting other people begins.

They've caused too much suffering, they've enabled and shaped the policy of a little dictator. They've stood by to tut-tut the "sins" of people who are dying in agony. They're doing their damndest to warp the Constitution to mean something it never did; they're attempting to kill it. They claim that they're a majority, and that they're persecuted.

Time's up, fundamentalists.

20. Religious believers just never learn...
Jerusalem, 30 August, 70 CE:

Titus walked into the so-called Holy Place, where only the Jewish high priest had been allowed to tread...He walked a little farther on, through a curtained opening, into the Holy Of Holies, God's abode, where even the high priest could venture only on the Day Of Atonement.

On the day the Temple fell, Titus found God's room to be empty...

Meanwhile, the Zealots looked to the heavens, certain that the prophecies of old would be fulfilled and God would smite the heathen violators of the Temple and save the Jews.

But their prayers went unanswered, their expectations were unfulfilled.

From "Caesar's Legion" by Stephen Dando-Collins. In this section, he's describing the final Roman assault on Jerusalem.

56. No, it is BOTH Israel and godless Nawlins behavior
Hey, bucko, the sun rose yesterday pretty damned close to where it roise this morning. God's will? or planetary movement controlled by mass, gravity and inertia?

No, it has to be the former. The latter is too complex for them to understand

60. Fuck them all
All the fucking nutcakes that have a cause for this storm other than the weather and maybe God (not a vengeful God) can go to hell. Get a grip you fucking wackos. This isn't the first disaster in the US and the world and it certainly won't be the last.

62. It's time to recognize these radical clerics for what they are:
TERRORISTS.

It's time we recognized religious mania as the psychosis that it clearly is and locked these people away where they can no longer cause harm to others.

71. Call the Language Police: "extremist" is a poor substitute for "lunatic"
And anyone who'd claim that about a natural disaster is a lunatic, suffering from major delusions.

It borders on criminal that the press would treat their ravings with more respect than those they could hear on any urban street corner. There's an agenda there, and it's vicious.

73. Fundies..
.... are so funny. If I see one I'm going to ask them just what horrible sin Ronald Reagan committed that forced god to put him into a drooling demented state for over a decade.

I'm really interested in their answer.
