U.S. Troops Ambushed In 2 Cities

Iraq's ambush bombers struck Wednesday in the center of Baghdad and in the tense Sunni Muslim area west of the capital, rocking U.S. Army convoys with roadside bombs.

The attack in Baghdad inflicted only light casualties, a U.S. officer at the scene reported. Witnesses said four Americans were carried away on stretchers in an attack on a three-vehicle convoy on the western end of the flashpoint city Fallujah, but there was no comment from U.S. officials. Local residents cheered and looted one of the vehicles abandoned in the attack.

In the north, U.S. troops of the 4th Infantry Division staged overnight raids around the cities of Tikrit and Baqouba. U.S. officers said an Iraqi major general, who was not identified, was seized in the Baqouba operation.

TIKRIT, Iraq- U.S. soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division detained several suspects, including one former major general in Saddam Hussein's army, during raids across the division's sector, U.S. officials said.

In raids around Tikrit, Saddam's hometown, troops arrested several people believed involved in guerrilla attacks against U.S. troops, U.S. officials said.

U.S. officers in Baqouba said a major general, who was not identified, was picked up in a raid around that city 30 miles northeast of Baghdad in the 4th Infantry Division sector. The division is based at Fort Hood in Central Texas.

The area around Tikrit has been the scene of increased attacks on U.S. troops, which coalition forces blame on die-hard Saddam supporters and members of his Fedayeen militia.

Ten suspects were detained in the raid in the Tikrit area, including six "targeted individuals," according to Lt. Col. Steve Russell, commander of the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division. (snip/...)
