Nearly Half of U.S. Adults Say President Bush Has Done a Poor Job Handling the Hurricane Relief Efforts
Author: Harris Interactive
Published on September 16, 2005, 07:53

Almost half of U.S. adults (46%) say President Bush has done a poor job handling the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, according to the latest Harris Poll. About one-quarter (24%) believes he has done a fair job while 21 percent believe he has done a good job and only nine percent say the president has done an excellent job in handling the relief efforts.

These are some of the findings of a nationwide survey of 2,242 U.S. adults conducted online by Harris Interactive(R) between September 6 and 12, 2005.

There is also a strong sense that the hurricane will have a significant impact on the U.S. economy. More than two in five adults (45%) believe there will be a great impact on the U.S. economy due to Katrina while 41 percent believe there will be somewhat of an impact on the U.S. economy. Only 13 percent say there will be a small impact and one percent believes there will be no impact at all on the economy.

Separately, when asked who or what they hold responsible for the increase in gas prices, the hurricane itself is only held responsible by 16 percent of adults. One-third (33%) of adults hold U.S. oil companies responsible, followed by 18 percent who hold President Bush responsible and 18 percent who hold OPEC and oil producing countries responsible. Only 12 percent hold increasing demand in world markets responsible for the rise in prices and two percent hold Congress responsible.

3. "Fair" is still a negative response....
so it's realy 30% approve, 70% disapprove. Of course, you won't see it phrased that way. Must protect Dear Leader.

9. I wouldn't say "stupid"...
...but I would say so ideologically-driven that they let their beliefs trump the observable evidence.

After all, last November, Chimpy had done a proveably-bad job on Iraq, the economy, etc., etc. Gas prices were at an all-time high (of course, chicken feed compared to where they are now). These would usually be enough to doom a sitting President. So why did Bush get re-elected? Because he could count on nearly 50% of the country ignoring the facts and supporting him because he was a "Christian conservative" of "good character" (i.e. no cheating on his marriage). With that size voting bloc assured, all it took was a little Osama fear-mongering and/or a little vote fraud to tip the balance in his favor.

If people had looked at the facts in making up their minds rather than their fantasy image of the way America was in "the good old days" (hard-working, patriotic, church-going nuclear families with 2.5 children living the suburban or small-town dream through the goodness of Our Free Enterprise System, Negros "knowing their place," teenagers respecting their parents and "saving themselves" for marriage, the U.S. always fighting for benevolent causes and always winning :eyes: ), Bush would have had no more chance of re-election than Jimmy Carter did in 1980, no matter how many votes Diebold rigged.
