FT: Republicans in disarray after DeLay indictment

Republican leadership in Congress was thrown into disarray on Wednesday after Tom DeLay, the second most powerful member of the House of Representatives, was forced to step aside to fight allegations of campaign finance irregularities.

Mr DeLay, the House majority leader, is a central figure in the conservative movement, valued for his fundraising prowess, his ability to squeeze out victories on close votes, and his management of House schedules to protect his members from difficult votes.

<snip>

His indictment is a blow to President George W. Bush at a time when the White House is facing growing unrest in Congress.

“He's the one person they can't replace,” Steny Hoyer, a senior Democrat in the House, said earlier this year of Mr DeLay.

And lookie here! We will have two arm-twisters to fill in for the "hammer"!

Not two after all:

House GOP selects Blunt to replace DeLay

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- House Republicans on Wednesday unanimously selected Majority Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri, No. 3 in the House GOP leadership, to temporarily take over Rep. Tom DeLay's majority-leader duties, lawmakers said. DeLay, R-Texas, was indicted earlier Wednesday by a Texas jury on a charge of conspiring to violate state election laws. Under House GOP rules, DeLay was required to temporarily relinquish his leadership post. Earlier news reports indicated that House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., would push for House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier, R-Calif., to fill in for DeLay.

30. You got that one right - Dreier is most definitely not only gay, he is a
very sexually promiscuous gay. Trolling for quickies and one-night-stands at Republican fundraisers, no less (I have insider knowledge about this). Shameful behavior. No wonder the fundies didn't want him to take over for Delay.

16. People only have the power others give them. DeLay is now rendered
a lowly Republican. Take away the money and the political cover and he is even an ignorant, criminal going all the way back to his exterminator days.

17. Serves Them Right
I get personal satisfaction from seeing these two-faced pricks go down while dragging their breeding ground of a political party down with them.

Remember how the GOP and media went after Clinton and his family? They are lucky we don't have the monetary means to bring these fuckers down.

19. Delay slandered Micheal Shiavo, as I recall.
So, a little bit of bad karma is coming back on Delay - not that there isn't plenty more where that came from.

21. To many "rumors" about Drier that make unacceptable to the fundies
... I am speaking of his sexual orientation and the rumors surrounding it. That makes him unacceptable to these whacked out fundies It will be nice when someday this will not be an issue anymore...

31. Not just RUMORS about Dreier...............he is most definitely gay,
and can't seem to refrain from promiscuous behavior even at Republican fundraisers. He likes to hit on attractive men he thinks are single and might be gay. He hit on a friend of mine who is NOT gay, and the friend told all. I told my friend he should have said yes to Dreier and then taken a camera to the rondezvous..........

We deserve so much.

America has been wounded. And they kicked it while it was down. Now we wait for the ambulance. Then the police.

26. This is good, but when do we move on with Plamegate? It seems to
have dropped completely off the radar. The more charges and investigations through out the Repuke machine at once, the more they can scream partisan witch-hunt until the trials begin.

Meanwhile the biggest crime - waging an illegal war on false pretenses gets buried.

32. I started dancing around, singing, "They indicted Tom DeLay,
They indicted Tom Delay!"

My puppy started jumping, and I danced with her. Now she thinks I am nuts.

Does anyone remember that poem Jeff Matson posted here, sung to the tune of "Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley?"

It had a stanza that said "Hang Down Your Head, Tom DeLay...Bug Boy is Gonna Fry."

I need to search for that.

36. The "disarray" thing was confirmed for me
yesterday. Every time Delay's ugly mug was on TV he was forcing a smile and insisting repeatedly that this unites the Rethug party. heh heh

That's right Tom, repeat it often enough and it'll be true. Mmm Hmm.
