IRVINE, Calif. Sep 30, 2005 — Marilyn Brewer, a leading Republican candidate for the nation's only open House seat, stared into the TV camera and proclaimed her support for the president.

She was not talking about George W. Bush.

"I stand side by side with Ronald Reagan on less taxes and less government," Brewer told voters at a candidate forum.

The former state assemblywoman also praised Nancy Reagan for her devotion to stem cell research, an issue that has bedeviled the Bush White House. And she touts as her prize endorsement Sen. John McCain, the president's sometime rival and critic.

Not a word about Bush.

Later, the self-described loyal Republican who voted for the president in 2004 explained her calculus: "If the election was this year … he would not be re-elected."

Turnout is the key ... with 10 Republicans + Gilchrist ... if a candidate receives a majority of votes cast, he/she is declared elected. If no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast, only then will a December vote occur:

"If no candidate receives a majority of votes cast, the name of that candidate of each qualified political party who receives the most votes cast for all candidates of that party would be placed on the special general election ballot as the candidate of that party."

There are 4 Democrats in the field of 17 candidates, 10 GOP, 1 Green, 1 Libertarian, plus the Minuteman as an American Independent.

I don't know if all of Orange County uses ES&S machines, but I'm sure it's a good county for Rove to have padded **'s numbers in 2004.

real race. One animal rescuer who hates the God-Chimp and thinks he's the next Mussolini voted for Brewer and actually worked with her often. The Dem slate seems rather good as well. The primary is on the 4th, and the general on Dec. 6. Minutemen founder Gilchrist is also running!

I'm with what the Sushi Bandit said up thread, and it's essentially the complaint I made to the DNC ... considering the large field of candidates, the Democrats may have had a chance with a little coordination and effort. Granted I read that Orange Co., CA., delivered Bu$h the biggest margin of any US county in 2004 (with ES&S machines, some Rove padding might have occurred), but there are 10 GOP candidates seeking the 48th's seat. In my message to the DNC, I, also, expressed how disheartening it was for a Democrat to get a GOP Brewer mailer with an endorsement by a former OC Democratic congressman (Jerry Patterson). Who's in charge here?

Seems this election has been kept low key aside from the multitude of street signs. Couldn't this election have been held in November along with the Gropinator's initiative drive to ruin California?
