http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20031024/wl_afp/iraq_turkey_us_troops&cid=1512&ncid=1473ANKARA (AFP) - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the United States had suspended talks on a request for Ankara to send thousands of troops to Iraq.
The remarks came amid intense speculation here that Washington is about to give up on the idea of a Turkish deployment in Iraq, which has triggered harsh objections from the country's interim leadership.
"The United States called our general staff some time ago and said 'give us some time... and we will continue later,'" Erdogan told Turkish reporters Friday during a visit to Tajikistan, according to the NTV news channel.
He said, however, that "the fact that a pause has been called in the talks does not mean that this job is over."
