Govs to Bush: Relief our job

Govs to Bush: Relief our job
By Bill Nichols and Richard Benedetto, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — There is almost no support among the nation's governors for President Bush's suggestion that the Pentagon could take the lead in responding to catastrophic natural disasters, a USA TODAY survey has found.
Of the 38 governors who responded to a request for reaction to Bush's comments, only two backed the idea: Republicans Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota.

Half the state chief executives said they were opposed or had reservations, including Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the president's brother. Eleven wanted more details before taking a position, and 12 did not respond.

Most governors who opposed the suggestion said they would resist any effort by Washington to usurp state control of disaster relief, even in a devastating event like Hurricane Katrina, in which more than 1,100 people died.

5. If Katrina taught us anything...
it's that we cannot depend on the government. No state will trust shrub to do what's right. If they do, people die... then the local government gets the blame.

9. BALLSY! >> "Bush mentioned the idea after criticism of the sluggish..."
....federal response to Katrina. "Is there a circumstance in which the Department of Defense becomes the lead agency?" Bush asked Sept. 25. "That's going to be a very important consideration for Congress to think about."

Unflippin believeable! The fact is that the sluggish federal response was because BUSH was to busy eating cake, schmoozing with Vets, strumming a guitar and FEMA's know nothing Brownie couldn't get his inexperienced shit together to do what they were supposed to do. This gross and deadly incompetence happened when the FEDERAL "Government" failed to act NOT the damn STATES Gov's... Blanco did her job, did all she could and asked for help from the Fed's in a very timely manner, Bush granted it which threw the ball in the FED's hands and THEY dropped it. :banghead:

Maybe if Bush had left the flippin STATE's National Guard units where they BELONG the the response time would have been much better since they wouldn't have been in the wrong damn gulf and the Gov's could have called them up instead of waiting for Bush and Brownie to get their collective thumbs out of their asses.

What ever happened to state's rights? What ever happened to the Republican desire and push for a SMALLER federal government? :puke:

Great God/dess I've definately fallen down the flippin rabbit hole from hell but the red queen is just Bush* in drag and he's wigged out on booze and 'coke'. :grr: (with apologies to real drag queens everywhere for the analogy).

15. Just so typically stupid.
FEMA's role is to assist states and help coordinate disaster aid. Part of that mandate means making sure the mechanisms of disaster response in each state work. FEMA failed terribly in New Orleans in assisting and coordinating Louisiana's aid needs, so now the Bush response is that FEMA should take over?

What we need isn't federal dominance, it's better communication, and better preparedness. Leave it to Bush to learn the wrong lessons from his mistakes.
