Possible link between Meningitis vaccine and Guillain Barre disease
http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety/2005/safety05.htm#Menactra

The FDA is not yet attributing a causal link, but is investigatin five cases that followed administration of Menactra.

The meningitis vaccine Menactra (Aventis) is widely given to reduce the chances of contracting bacterial meningitis. Over the past few years, the manufacturer and advocacy groups have lobbied state legislatures and succeeded in making this vaccine a requirement for college freshmen.

Guillain Barre disease is a neurologic disease of descending paralysis. At its worst, the patient is paralyzed and unable to breath, requiring mechanical ventilation. GB was last seen in large numbers following administration of a flu vaccine in 1976-77. It is a rare disease, but not so uncommon as to be unrecognized.

3. Not again!
Shades of the Swine Flu vaccine. GB is terrible and is not all that rare. I took care of quite a few of them when I was an ICU nurse.

6. I was working in a chest ICU in 1976
and we had a federal prisoner with it. The guards insisted on keeping him leg shackled to the bed even though we had him trached and on a vent.
Oh well. We saw a ton that year because of the swine flu vaccine.

4. Not good news for me...
I have 2 children that are under a state mandate to get this vaccine as soon as feasible, and now they're saying that it may be dangerous? I was hesitating before because I understood it works pretty well for a year or so after the vaccine, but the efficacy goes down after that.

Am I mis-informed?

7. There are TWO vaccines- one older, one newer
I just researched this very thing because my daughter
was entering college.
It is NOT mandatory at her school, but recommended.
The nurse I spoke to at the university explained
that there were two versions of the vaccine.
One they have used for years and then this
new one that they have linked to ADR.

IF you HAVE to have your children vaccinated,
and I know some states will not let your
children enroll in public schools with out certain
vaccines, be SURE you insist on the older vaccine.

We decided not to get either since my daughter's
school did not madate it.

I don't trust the pharma cartel at ALL.

5. additional information/link
http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2005/NEW01238.html

This site states that the occurrence is within the actuarial expectation range. However, they qualify that with admission that vaccine incidents are underreported and that they are concerned with the short time between administration and the onset, (2-3 weeks in these cases).
