Cheney warns against early pullout from Iraq
CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney warned on Monday that Iraq could become a staging area for large-scale terrorist attacks on the United States if troops are withdrawn too early, as he tried to shore up waning public support for the war.

With no let-up in the Iraqi insurgency, opinion polls showing U.S. public unease and some lawmakers questioning how long troops will remain, the Bush administration has stressed in recent weeks that it does not view pulling out as an option.

As he visited Marines who just returned from a seven-month deployment in Iraq, Cheney said there had been "superb" progress. U.S. generals last week had offered a cautious assessment of the readiness of Iraqi forces to take over the country's security.

Al Qaeda-linked insurgents in Iraq were testing U.S. resolve, Cheney said.

"If the terrorists were to succeed, they would return Iraq to the rule of tyrants, make it a source of instability in the Middle East and use it as a staging area for ever greater attacks against America and other civilized nations," he told an audience that included 4,500 Marines from the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.

Cheney was a leading architect of the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, predicting U.S. forces would be "greeted as liberators" and saying it would help defeat terrorism by depriving al Qaeda of an ally. He has also regularly given upbeat defenses of U.S. Iraq policy, saying in May the insurgency was in its "last throes."

7. that rhetoric is soooo transparent
it confirms what many people have claimed...the real reason for the invasion (sorry "liberation") is to ensure the constant flow of capital through the banking system. Drug trade ditto - if the stuff was legalised the banking system would be a tad short of that capital flow and....kerunsch.

My own rhetoric (crap at that) notwithstanding, methinks the picture is faked - it seems it was taken in daylight and we know the undead don't like sunlight...

8. Don't any of them ever think before they talk?
Ok, he thinks that if we pull out, Iraq would fall into the hands of tyrants. Don't most Iraqis view us as tyrants? Or Iraq would become a source of instability; what is it now, then? Use it as a staging area for even greater attacks against America and other countries...well, when he says even greater attacks, if he's referring to the WTC disaster, that plot wasn't hatched in Iraq anyway.

The man is completely delusional. Invading Iraq has been a disaster, any way you look at it. Going by Cheney's track record for predicting things, wasn't he absolutely, positively, 100% that Saddam possessed WMDs? What HAS he been right about?

Weak Responses Led to 9/11, Cheney Asserts
Inadequate Retaliation Seen in 7 Cases

By Sam Coates
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, October 4, 2005; Page A18

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C., Oct. 3 -- The Bush administration will aggressively pursue terrorism in Iraq and on "every other front," Vice President Cheney said Monday, asserting that the United States is now paying the price for two decades of weak responses to terrorist attacks.

Addressing Marines who have just returned from Iraq, Cheney said that the failure of both Republican and Democratic administrations to retaliate decisively to terrorism incidents during the 1980s and 1990s led directly to the atrocities of Sept. 11, 2001.
"The terrorists came to believe that they could strike America without paying any price. And so they continued to wage those attacks, making the world less safe and eventually striking the United States on 9/11," Cheney said.

-snip-
Cheney's speech was part of a renewed focus by the Bush administration on Iraq ahead of next week's referendum on a draft constitution. Bush is preparing to give a speech on terrorism Thursday.

I guess that must include the Great Leader Ronald Reagan's administration too, as well as the Adult Bush's administration in which he served as Defense Secretary.

This blame Clinton first strategy has become a bit timeworn.

A good preemptive strategy for stopping terrorism would be for the US to not stick our nose in other people's business where it ain't supposed to be.

Because there are a lot of anti-war people who don't love terrorism and don't want more 9/11s, but think the war is lost.

They are absolutely shitting themselves with fear that they have lost the war and the situation is totally outside of their control now. All they can do is beg for support by invoking terrorism and 9/11.

31. How about NO response?
Particularly from Tricky Dick II and bu$hit even when they had PDBs staring them in the face saying terrorists planned to attack and even when they had a stack of warnings from other countries about impending attacks?

WHO was it that trashcanned the US Commission on Ntl Security 21st Century reports in January 2001? It was none other than GWB. He said "VP Cheney will be handling the issue of terrorism".

Cheney didn't. And when 9-11 happened he was hiding in his bunker somewhere.

This claim - now - of Tricky Dick II's is pure, unadulterated bu$hit.

probably emboldened the terrorists. Any second thought the hijackers might have had prior to carrying out their plot were likely assuaged when they saw the president of the United States literally asleep on the job.

So this Cheney guy is distorting the real picture....It wasn't Clinton...it was them, Bush and Dick.

It's really President Arthur's fault. What a SHODDY foreign policy!

"I can not too strongly urge the duty of restoring our Navy as rapidly as possible to the high state of efficiency which formerly characterized it. As the long peace that has lulled us into a state of fancied security may at any time be disturbed, it is plain that the policy of strengthening this arm of the service is dictated by considerations of wise economy, of just regard for our future tranquillity, and of true appreciation of the dignity and honor of the Republic." Yeah, WHATEVER! Talk talk talk!! Meanwhile our Fearless Leaderhas to clean up the mess Chester & Co. made. This is what HAPPENS when you start all this "TRANQUILLITY" talk... ooh, break out the granola... KOOM-BA-YAAAA

49. Cheney Lobbied Congress To Ease Sanctions Against Terrorist Countries
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 06:47 AM by Pryderi
Old news, but Cheney shouldn't be playing the blame game.

Cheney Lobbied Congress To Ease Sanctions Against Terrorist Countries While He Was CEO Of Halliburton
by Jason Leopold

Vice President Dick Cheney is a bad guy. He can toss around the F-word all he wants in response to the criticism directed at him as a result of his close ties to Halliburton, the company he headed from 1995-2000, but he can’t hide from the truth.

It was Cheney who urged Congress in 1996 to ease sanctions against Iran, a country that’s part of President Bush’s axis of evil, so Halliburton could legitimately do business there.

During a trip to the Middle East in March 1996, Cheney told some U.S. businessmen that Congress should ease sanctions in Iran and Libya to foster better relationships with those countries.

"Let me make a generalized statement about a trend I see in the U.S. Congress that I find disturbing, that applies not only with respect to the Iranian situation but a number of others as well," Cheney said at the time. "I think we Americans sometimes make mistakes...There seems to be an assumption that somehow we know what's best for everybody else and that we are going to use our economic clout to get everybody else to live the way we would like."

50. One line in his speech that seems to hold little water...
"The terrorists came to believe that they could strike America without paying any price."

The 19 men in those planes that struck on September the 11th are dead....there is no higher price you could pay then your life, even if in my opinion, those 19 people were assholes they still seemed to understand the price and carried out what they did knowing what the end result was going to be..their death.

Mr Cheney can try and pretend that Iraq was a terrorist training ground before the war but the facts still stand....it was not.

This man reminds me a child, when given a square block he/she will try to make it fit into a circle..in vain they will do all they can to ram the block Thur that hole knowing something just isn't working...a smart child just looks for the block hole and moves on, but not Mr Cheney and not his fellow Neo-Cons...all they know is force.

One needs to go at terrorist in a multi-pronged attack..head-on is the ONE thing they want above all else...just look how Bin Ladens numbers have swelled in the last few years because of our attack on Iraq.

Good luck Richard, but I don't think that square peg will ever fit that round hole no matter how hard you try and push it.
