WP: The Sales Calls Begin on Capitol Hill, but Some Aren't Buying
By Dana Milbank

The woman President Bush called the most qualified person in America to sit on the Supreme Court arrived early yesterday morning for her courtesy call on Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.). They talked about the weather.

"After Hurricane Katrina hit, it was 108 in Austin," the senator noted, calling it "unseasonably hot."

When Cornyn moved on to extoll the pleasures of Austin, Harriet Miers ventured her first opinion. "I agree," she said. "It's a great place."

Cornyn looked around. "What else should we talk about?" he wondered out loud.

The way things have been going since Bush nominated Miers on Monday, they'd have been well advised to stick with the weather.

3. And she discussed the leaves with Leahy...
...see, she knows all about geography. Now put that Bush cronie on the bench, pronto, so she can protect the ass of the most "brilliant man in the world"...

4. This stuff is getting too bizarre
This nomination has to have been a put up job. All these stories are coming out too fast and too furious. But what I would like to know is, why even bother with the ruse? Just to grab headlines? Roberts sailed through - surely they could have found the female equivalent in the judicial ranks? I just don't get it.

Why are "qualifications" suddenly so important to the GOP?
It never has been an issue before! I mean...they selected GW didn't they? And Brownie? And Condi? etc. Need I go on?

At a morning meeting, conservative leaders told White House adviser Ed Gillespie of their unhappiness. And Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) told MSNBC he is "not comfortable with the nominee," asking rhetorically: "Is she the most qualified person? Clearly, the answer to that is 'no.' "

8. Clarence Thomas certainly wasn't the most qualified candidate
for SCOTUS. They all wanted him, anyway.

6. i still say this is a p.t. barnum sideshow
one of two options. they cave at the last minute and confirm her, or two, they don't confirm her and bush gets to nominate someone WORSE. the part i'm really waiting for is when she plays the victim during her hearings. should be funny. i bet she suddenly has real memory troubles and will suddenly have NO opinions about any issues. and she'll get away with it too, just like roberts.
the REAL issue of course, is her history as bush's pet FIXER. but i doubt that stuff will be even be addressed in any meaningful way.

9. They have sold so much dangerous crap so far, i guess it is news
They have sold so much dangerous crap so successfully so far, i guess it is news when people have a sensible reaction to more reckless crony appointments. Or is the Post doing its job in promoting the concept of the "conservative outrage" at the Meiers appointment?
