Stenberg announces another attempt for U.S. Senate seat
By Bret Hayworth Journal staff writer
SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Don Stenberg lost a narrow election for the U.S. Senate in 2000, and is back again, hoping he can leap to victory in November 2006 and represent Nebraskans.
If Stenberg wins the May 2006 Republican primary, he would likely face incumbent Democrat Sen. Ben Nelson, whom Stenberg spent more time criticizing Wednesday than his two Republican primary opponents.
The possibility of a Nelson-Stenberg rematch was on Stenberg's mind as he spoke at the Marina Inn, one of six stops Wednesday in his candidacy kickoff tour.
Stenberg repeatedly tied Nelson to the "liberal" wing of the Democratic Party, saying the senator may try to position himself as a moderate, but "time after time, he has done his best to put liberal Democrats in control of the government of the United States." Stenberg cited Nelson's support of presidential candidate Al Gore in 2000 and U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota.
