Troops take Bolivia oil field from protesters
Thursday, October 6, 2005; Posted: 10:27 a.m. EDT (14:27 GMT)

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) -- A combined force of 800 soldiers and police on Thursday took control of an oil field in eastern Bolivia that was seized by peasants. Workers quickly resumed pumping natural gas to neighboring Argentina, authorities reported.

"There was no need to use force," because the demonstrators agreed to peacefully leave the oil field in Santa Rosa del Sara, some 700 kilometers (435 miles) east of La Paz, according to police Col. Federico Gonzalez.

The demonstrators occupied the installation on Tuesday to press authorities for several demands, including paving a local road and delivery of farmland to peasants.

Gov. Ruben Dario Cuellar in the nearby city of Santa Cruz said negotiations with the demonstrators will continue and that police and military forces will leave the area. <snip>
