As of Sunday, Oct. 26, 345 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq, according to the Department of Defense. snip

On or since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 207 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, according to the latest Defense Department figures.

1. Yeah NNN
But those are Defense Department figures. AND they don't include the injured. Did you know that the Iraqi hospitals are now off-limits to journalists? So we have no idea how many Iraqis have been injured or died. (They can't get into the morges either).

It also seems that some of those soldiers kept on "hold" in those barracks in Georgia are there because of some lung problems that no-one can explain. Another kind of Gulf War syndrome I suspect.

The truth will never come out. At least not in my lifetime.

2. I hate stories about how many US servicemen have died . . .
because they totally negate the value of the thousands of Iraqi lives that have been lost . . . just infuriates me that no one is talking about these people, most of whom were civilians . . .

It is pitiful that no one ever looks at the (at least) 57,000 Iraqi deaths between 1991 and 1999 plus the thousands just killed in the illegal "war". Or those who have died or will die because we spread depleted Uranium across the land. No one ever seemed to notice either that thousands of women were buried alive in Afganistan by one of our mercenary armies, the Taliban, while thousands of other Afgani women, children and men had been put to death earlier by the Mujahedeen who were also our mercenary army. The depth of sickness in this country is appalling. Consider what was done when our army pulled up in front of a house in Iraq and blew away Saddam Hussein's sons and, presumably, their families, and then showed, and gloated over, their bodies on national T.V. . Whatever happened to trials? Who knows what these sons did or if they had any influence at all at the time they were slaughtered?

12. that is the awful truth
the general public don't give 2 seconds thought to Iraqis that have died.
Which also gives added weight to their pathetic statments now that Iraq is so much better off.

They didn't care less before and they don't care now afterthe invasion about Iraqis, the only thing that will imobilise them is the death of US servicemen.

5. Unfortunate
But we must be practical. I'm sorry, but unfortunately the American public just could not care less about Iraqi civilians killed. To them, it's just a bunch of brown people being blown up. Only when All-American boys are brought home in body bags will they begin to ask questions. It's terrible that things are that way, but that is how it is. If we want to end the war, we must deal in reality, and that means, regrettably, talking about dead US personell more often than dead Iraqis. Do you think it was the civilian casulties that mobilized opposition to the Vietnam War? It was not, it was mounting US casulties. Americans must be able to identify with the victims of war for them to say the war is wrong. Unfortunately, a typical white bread family in Green Bay, Wisconsin is just not going to care if a bunch of Iraqis are blown up, but when Pvt. Jonny Hometown, who was quarterback for the local high school football team, is blown up by roadside bomb in Baghdad, these people will start to ask questions.

15. Totally Agree
Caught a snippet of the rush show yesterday when his stand in, and I don't know who it was, stated that Oakland had over 100 murders this year, he then stated quite plainly, that was more than Iraq.

8. Ignorant Americans
It is time for ignorant, provincial, self-satisfied UGLY AMERICANS to get a life. My best friend who is totally hard-headed and will not listen to reason thinks America is the best country. I do not agree with her. We're the best at polluting the environment.

13. Does CNN NewsNight do a daily "body count" every night?
I noticed tonight that on Aaron Brown's show they had the names, rank, age and hometowns listed of the latest three GI's to killed i Iraq? Is this something they've started doing regularly? Somewhat reminiscent of the Cronkite's body count each evening during 'Nam.
