Opinions of GOP faithful shifting (SC poll shows big drop in *'s F-score)

Opinions of GOP faithful shifting
S.C. poll shows change in views on abortion, significant drop in Bush’s job performance rating
By LEE BANDY
Staff Writer

Oct. 23, 2005 /The State/
• President Bush’s job performance rating has taken a nose dive in South Carolina.

• Gov. Mark Sanford remains extremely popular among rank-and-file Republicans, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into votes for him.

• S.C. Republicans are not as strongly anti-abortion as they once were.

• U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona dominates the field among GOP presidential hopefuls in the state.

• Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham has emerged as the most popular political leader in South Carolina.

These are highlights of a recent statewide poll taken by Richard Quinn and Associates, a Columbia-based Republican consulting firm. The survey of 879 active Republican primary voters was conducted Oct. 10-1l. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

Translation: SC's Dixiepublicans are moving a little to the center along with Graham, and have had it with the Kennebunkport Kowboy. The entire article is worth a read.

2. Bush's approval rating number not in the article!
Nowhere in the article is Bush's approval rating in SC mentioned. All sorts of other numbers are shown.

It must be really, really, really, really bad.

8. Bush down, Graham up, Sanford strong in poll
<snip> While Bush's job approval ratings are still stronger in South Carolina than elsewhere, his numbers have suffered here as well. The job disapproval rating for the president has grown to 26 percent from 10 percent among Republicans over the past six months. <snip>

A recent poll taken by Survey USA of all S.C. voters -- not just Republican loyalists -- had Bush's disapproval rating at 58 percent. <snip>

10. !!!
Yes, the disapproval rating is there, but the APPROVAL rating is never mentioned. It could be 25 for all we know. The fact that it is NOT INCLUDED means it's way, way down.

3. SC folks are getting tired of the religiously insane. That includes Bu$h.
NEW YORK — Nearly 140 years after the Civil War, another group of Americans wants to secede from the union.

Christian Exodus, a California-based group, wants God to be its commander in chief. Decrying what it perceives as the unjust secularization of the United States, it wants a sovereign state of its own.

But rather than eye the Golden State — a "lost cause," says the group's founder — it'll settle for South Carolina.
(More if you have the stomach)

The California-based fringe group, Christian Exodus, is partly to blame for the shifts in attitudes around these parts. This small group (about 100) has been getting a lot of press, especially in upstate SC (Greenville/Spartanburg). It has been a real turn-off for most people around here. Even the right-wingy Jeebus-dingy Bob Jones "University" folks wants nothing to do with Christian Exodus.

As one anti-"Exodus" LTTE in the Greenville News put it recently, and I paraphrase, "We don't want you or your ilk here in South Carolina. All three of you!"

Anti-war and anti-Bu$h sentiment, too, is much more palpable here than it was just a few months ago. GOP Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham are quite popular in SC. Don't look for any tectonic shifts away from the GOP in SC; the big shifts and rifts will be within the state GOP party.

4. I think Iraq and Katrina have moved the country closer to the center
I rarely agree with David Brooks, but agree with him that Iraq and Katrina have shifted the country closer to the center.

He speculates that Giuliani and McCain would be the front-runners for the GOP nomination next time.

I think he's right.

6. Giuliani is pro-choice
and even with the recent shifts, the hardcore GOP activists would not let that stand through the primaries.

7. I don't think that's it. I think that the RW thinks Bush is selling out
with the Miers nomination. The RW isn't unsold on the right wing. They just don't trust Bush anymore to be their guy for the supreme court nominations.
